So with the World Cup group stage now complete we’ve analysed the points scored from the top 25% scoring players (221 out of the total 832 players from all the squads) and one question naturally arises:
What would have been the highest-scoring FanTeam starting XI team possible (ignoring transfers) under the game’s budget and squad restrictions?
Using the group-stage scores and FanTeam prices, we analysed every position while applying the following constraints:
- £110m total squad budget
- 15-man squad
- Maximum 3 players per country
- Four bench players assumed to be minimum-price non-scoring assets:
- 1 Goalkeeper (£4.0m)
- 2 Defenders (£4.0m each)
- 1 Midfielder (£4.0m)
That leaves £94.0m available for the starting XI.
The result is a fascinating team packed with many of the tournament’s biggest stars, but also a few unexpected names who delivered outstanding value.

Many managers might expect Jonathan David (£7.5m) to feature after his hat-trick against Qatar, but fitting David into the squad requires sacrificing points elsewhere. The optimal solution is actually Haaland plus Wissa, which edges out all alternative combinations while remaining within budget.

Colombia’s attacking full-back quietly became one of the tournament’s best defensive picks.
Raul Rangel (21.4 points)
Goalkeepers are often overlooked in fantasy football, but Rangel delivered outstanding value and outscored many much more popular options.
Yoane Wissa (21.0 points)
Wissa’s inclusion is what makes the maths work. While not the highest-scoring forward available, he allows the team to afford Messi, Vinicius, Dembele, Mbappé and Haaland simultaneously.

These six players form the backbone of the optimal squad and account for more than two-thirds of the team’s total score.
Final Thoughts
The analysis confirms something many successful fantasy managers already know: the best team is rarely just a collection of the highest-scoring players. Budget constraints matter. The combination of Messi, Vinicius, Dembele, Mbappé and Haaland was so powerful that it became worthwhile using value picks such as Rangel, Muñoz and Wissa elsewhere.
Had a manager somehow selected this exact starting XI before the tournament began, they would have amassed an incredible 299.4 points from their starting XI alone during the group stage. There are only 2 teams (of the almost 14,000 entries) that have scored over 300 points in the group stages (305.4 and 308.7) but both have used subs and transfers (and the leader has used the 1 wildcard already).
