Southampton v Liverpool preview, team news, tickets, and prediction

Southampton and Liverpool will clash in the Premier League on match day 12 of the 2024-25 season. Newly promoted Southampton are looking to make an impression in the topflight on their return, while Liverpool need no introduction as they have made a strong start to the season.

As of the time of writing, Southampton are ranked 20th with just 4 points to their name on the Premier League standings, while Liverpool sit at the top with 28 points from seven games. Soton have lost 4 of their last 5 games, while the Reds have won 4 of their last 5.

As usual, newly promoted teams have struggled to make an impact in the Premier League. Despite the cash spent in the summer, Soton have not been able to conjure some excellent results. Taylor Harwood-Bellis (Manchester City), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal), Flynn Downes (West Ham United), Cameron Archer (Aston Villa), Mateus Fernandes (Sporting CP), and Ben Brereton Díaz (Villarreal) were some of the new arrivals on the South Coast.

As of the time of writing, Soton have just managed one win in the Premier League (in GW10) and they host a side that is currently top of the table. They will need to bring their best performance to the table if they don’t want to be handed another defeat. Despite the poor start, they have impressed in some games, especially the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal back in October.

“We’ve had Newcastle away; Man U at home, where for half an hour we’ve been outstanding; and here,” Southampton head coach Russell Martin said after the defeat at the Emirates.

“Now we have to transfer that into the games that are going to define our season, and we have three or four of those coming up in the next block of games that are going to be vital. The league is so tight and is going to be so tight for so long, but today I saw so much in a lot of the guys and the team, the way it felt, to make me feel excited about what’s to come.”

Meanwhile, the Reds have made credible progress under Arne Slot following the departure of Jurgen Klopp after nearly a decade at Merseyside. The Reds won six of their opening seven games of the new Premier League campaign and are looking strong for the title alongside Arsenal and Manchester City who have had some recent disappointing results.

“Everyone is realistic enough; all the players understand that six games into the season doesn’t give you a realistic view on the league table,” Slot told reporters about the title race back in late September.

“That is more like 19 games that you can feel, ‘Right, where are we?’. But it helps if you get some good results, especially if you bring in a new manager and being a successor of such a successful one. Everybody understands that if we’d have lost four or five of these first six fixtures life would have been a bit different to how it is now.”

As of the time of writing, their biggest result came in the 3-0 bashing of Manchester United at Old Trafford. However, they did lose 1-0 to Nottingham Forest surprisingly at home but it is well known that the side can do a lot more when they are in their element and Forest now stand 5th in the table.

The last encounter between the two teams in the Premier League ended in a thrilling 4-4 draw, and if Soton can get themselves once again, they can disrupt the rhythm of the visitors. In terms of the head-to-head in their past 46 meetings, Southampton have won 11, Liverpool have won 25 matches, while 10 of those meetings have ended in stalemates.

Line-ups

As of the time of writing, Southampton do have some players out injured. Southampton have not shown that they are ready to fight for their place in the Premier League just yet. They will have to improve their performance if they want to get the right results under their belt. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been doing a fine job between the sticks but his defenders just have to do better.

Southampton XI: Ramsdale, Sugarawa, Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, Walker-Peters, Aribo, Lallana, Dibling, Fernandes, Armstrong, Archer.

Since Thiago and Matip left the club, Liverpool have enjoyed a clean bill of health, but goalkeeper Alisson Becker has joined them and still might not be fit for this trip. With Alisson expected out, Caoimhin Kelleher should start in goal, Conor Bradley is likely to replace injured Trent Alexander-Arnold at right back and skipper Virgil Van Dijk will lead the rest of the backline. Alexis Mac Allister, who impressed last term, is expected to continue in midfield alongside the rejuvenated Ryan Gravenberch, while Mohamed Salah is expected to keep the goals coming in attack with Diogo Jota expected to return from injury to provide the focal point.

Liverpool XI: Caoimhin Kelleher, Ibrahim Konate, Virgil Van Dijk, Andrew Robertson, Conor Bradley, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Mohamed Salah.

Prediction

Southampton are struggling with results and their identity is pretty not clear. With that knowledge, it is pretty difficult to judge them or predict what they will do when they welcome Liverpool to Saint Mary’s.

As of the time of writing, Liverpool have been flying under Arne Slot and they will be keen to maintain this impressive start. While the hosts might be difficult to beat, one would expect Liverpool to get over the line and walk away with all three points given it is bottom of the table v top.

Both teams would be looking to get something from the game so we expect them to go all out in this one, making for a really exciting match-up.
