While their clubs might be struggling for results, there are always individual players from relegation-battling teams who can help your Fantasy Premier League side.
Here’s a look at three players worth considering as their efforts to keep their clubs in the top flight might well land you with valuable points.
Saint-Maximin with Magpies’ Hopes on His Shoulders
It’s fair to say Newcastle United would probably be rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table if it was not for forward Allan Saint-Maximin. The Magpies have entered an exciting new era since their takeover but their newfound wealth could be spent in the second tier of English football next season if they are not careful. The battle at the bottom of the Premier League at present is just as tight as the fight for promotion in the second tier. Fulham are currently the favourites in the Betfair odds on the Championship but if promoted will the Cottagers be facing Newcastle in the top flight next term? Manager Eddie Howe and his team are looking to avoid being the subject of Championship tips and predictions next season and Saint-Maximin is doing all he can to help the Magpies climb the table. The Frenchman has managed to earn 62 points after his first 16 outings of the season. Just over 14% of teams have Saint-Maximin in their FPL team and he seems like a good point of difference player.
The 24-year-old has found the back of the net three times in the first 16 games and provided four assists. In those games, a 10-point haul against Brentford was his best return and the creative forward is likely to scoop up more points if Newcastle secure quality reinforcements in the January transfer window.
Dennis Standing Out for Hornets
Emmanuel Dennis would not be a forward many FPL players were talking about at the start of the season but the Watford striker has certainly made his mark. In the first 16 rounds of the Premier League he scored an impressive 84 points, the highest of any forward in the FPL at that stage. Dennis’ rise has not gone unnoticed with over a third of FPL players having the Hornets star in their teams in mid-December. The 24-year-old has needed no time at all to settle into life in the Premier League following his move from Belgium over the summer.
With big names like Mohamed Salah and Cristiano Ronaldo costing large sums, bringing in players like Dennis at £5.9 million and other bargains can have a big impact on your FPL season. Dennis looks like he will have a job on his hands keeping Watford in the top flight but he is certainly giving the Hornets a chance of survival.
Lowton a Solid Selection
Perhaps a player who can offer cover on the bench, Matthew Lowton has enjoyed a solid first half of the season for a Burley side battling for survival. While the Clarets were struggling to keep clean sheets at the start of the season, manager Sean Dyche has managed to tighten things up at the back. The Lancashire outfit managed to concede just one goal in three games against Wolves, Newcastle and West Ham in December. With Burnley’s defence improving, expect Lowton to keep on earning FPL points that your competitors might well be missing out on.
The relegation fight is a tough time for all teams involved, but some players thrive under the pressure, and they’re the ones you want in your side.
