Metal Hip Replacements
Just listening to an article on Newsnight about how the Government's Health Regulator has recommended that all patients who have had a metal hip replacement have them checked annually moving forward. There is a belief that the metal is deteriorating quicker than expected and people are getting poisoned by these particles of metal.
I've had to let my mother know as she had a hip replacement a few years back, even though she was only in her 50s. More information is here on BBC website and if you are online now the story is currently on BBC2

Re: Metal Hip Replacements
Was just talking to a consultant about this. They used to do hip resurfacing using metal, but that has the same issues so they only do it for people like Andy Murray now who needs to get back to elite sport.
Unfortunately looks like I'll be having a hip replacement soon. I'm a bit young really but one of them is pretty much bone on bone now - no cartilage left and physio hasn't helped that much so the consultant reckons there's not much option now. All goes back to a couple of injuries to that hip playing rugby. This will be my 3rd operation caused by playing. Brutal sport!
Really not looking forward to the few months after the op to be honest. I might be awake when they do it as well, listening to them sawing the top of my femur off

You don't have to listen to the sawing, just pop your Walkman on and listen to some hip op instead

That hip operation sounds tough, good luck and hope the recovery and physiotherapy go well when you do get the op.

Shouldn’t be that bad unless you’re unlucky in the postcode lottery. Probably 12m for NHS?

Re: Metal Hip Replacements
Just been for the pre-op assessment. Height, weight, BP, HR, ECG, several armfuls of blood, MRSA swab, Q&A with physio, Q&A with nursing team. Thought it was only going to be a half hour appointment!
anyway, assuming all the tests come back OK and my covid test tomorrow is negative its all systems go for this weekend

Well it’s done. Didn’t hear a lot. Just a bit of hammering at one point but nodded off for most of it until they were stitching me up.

Crikey. I know you can't get a simple lateral flow test any more but I'm not resorting to that.

We've got a handful but I wouldn't have been that generous! (tried to order more just before the end of April but they stopped sending them out saying they were out of stock, bloody panic hoarders).

Re: Metal Hip Replacements
Had the staples out today, all 35 of them
Up to walking about a mile a day with a bit of support from crutches. All the pain I used to get has gone. Just still a bit bruised and muscles getting used to having a joint that works properly again (and a leg that’s longer than it used to be)
Someone should tell Liam Gallagher to stop being a twit and get his fixed…
