Too many charity picks here. Darren Clarke plays 1 good tournament - Cavendish cycles thousands of miles and wins major races & sprints. No comparison.
Ferguson is a joke suggestion - great manager and a personality but his sporting days are well behind him in more ways than one.
Having said that the same muppets who voted for Zara and her mother may still be around plus all the other viewers who pick up there phones and vote/donate to the other major BBC & ITV scams(imo).
Don't get me started on Children in Need again.(There is a thread somewhere)

He did win the premier league title, and get to the champs league final this year. If they did chuck him in the 10 finalists he is bound to win cos he is simply a legend. The whole 25 years at Man United celebrations will also help his cause, I dont think he will get into that final 10, but who knows, I can only think of 9 Sportsmen/Women that deserve to be in the top 10. They might chuck Ferguson in there cos there is not an obvious 10 to choose from.

If SAF is even touted then I will be forced to cancel my TV licence. This is sports personality of the year for gods sake not effing geriatric incontinence last man standing award.
Has the viewing public no self respect - how could they even consider SAF with real sports personalities lining up to be acclaimed.

My wife says she doesn't really care but I have to consult her before I cancell TV licence.

After reading that, you should consult her before boiling a kettle.

Will his emotional story be mentioned on SPOTY??? - I doubt it, if it is then thats a bit unfair on everyone else to use that as an advantage, I could understand it being mentioned if his mrs died the week before the tournament, but she died bloody ages ago.

Rory McIlroy won the Shanghai Masters after a sudden-death play-off. So he has been through hell too. Boom Boom!

They do not mention it on their website ie. the SPOTY BBC website, and they did not mention it in their online BBC article when he won The Open.

But if they do mention it on the night I expect it will just be a verbal comment, I do not expect a sob story on video.

Golf World Cup.....so wheres Clarke? he was not selected cos he's plucking useless.

Mcilroy and Mcdowell making up the team (as you would expect) as they are the best 2 Irish Golfers.

Currently 2nd in the World Cup......c'mon Mcilroy win your third trophy of the year before your 4th (SPOTY) on December 19th.

It's nice and shiny but it's not an emotional backstory is it?

I can just see it now - *piano starts up - probably a Snow Patrol song (NI connection) - pretty quietly at first*
"Darren Clarke has had some tough times before winning this year's BRITISH Open Championship, his wife Heather, etc, etc......"

I think they will.....especially when they show the clips from his year.

How he dominated the Masters...but unfortunately couldn't quite get the win but showed great quality and confidence to come back fighting to easily win the US Open how he as consistently played well and moved up to number 2 in the world with his win at the Shaghai Masters and recently his win in the World Cup.

If he does win it that will top an excellent year for Mcilroy and will be another extra to add to his cause.

Clarke, one win, thats all they have to talk about.

I still think Cavendish will win but Mcilroy deserves to be at least in the top 2 after his year.

No one really cares about golf. ONLY golfer to win - Nick Faldo (English) in 1989.

Yes I do know that Nick Faldo is (English).

I wonder why he is the 'ONLY' golfer to win....ummm maybe cos the only British players to win a Major since then were this year...oh and Mcdowell last year (but who is going to vote for Mcdowell, he certainly had no chance anyway against McCoy)

Not sure how Strauss got in the top 10, his batting has been horrendous. Thought Broad would get in ahead of him and did not expect Kahn to be in there but it was hard to think of a 10th person.

Its defo between these 4:

Mcilroy
Farah
Cavendish
Clarke

Donald (No Chance)
Greene (No Chance)
Strauss (No Chance)
Cook (No Chance)
Murray (No Chance)
Kahn (No Chance)
