No one would care?
But the event is on the BBC shortly before the awards ceremony

Does anyone think Warburton will win if Wales win the World Cup?

The only people I can think of putting in the 10th place on the list are Rooney, won the PL title, got to the Champions League final, has been a scoring machine this season. Button, simply a nice guy, has done well with Mclaren although Red Bull have dominated. Adlington won some golds at the swimming worlds.
Think there is one name missing from everyone's list.

Sam Whaley-Cohen.

He will make the top ten and this is where alot of McCoy's voters will go.

I bet he makes the shortlist.

This guy won:

The Cheltenham Gold Cup and was 2nd in Grand National. Not a bad feat for an amateur.

Sadly for Murray he cant win sports personality this year or next unless he wins at least 2 of the Grand Slams next year - it is an olympic year and there is sure to be a major success there.
This year - forget it ATP finals mean nothing in tennis terms - half will be knackered / injured or indifferent me thinks.

Unless of course he releases a hit for xmas this year entitled "I love England and I want them to win the Euros next year"

Had the horses.

He was against Kauto Star, Denman and Imperial Commander in the Gold Cup and professional jockeys. Remember he is an amateur.

Oh and the Grand National. There were 39 other horses and he was not on the favourite.

It is sports personality so his amateur staus should make no difference.

If we want to talk about who deserves SPOTY on sporting achievement then Chrissie Wellington would be a shoo-in. Al Brownlee is also a World Champion.

But then it doesn't really work like that

Twitter followers 2 months ago:

Mcilroy: 661,000 Clarke: 102,000

Twitter followers today:

Mcilroy: 682,267 Clarke: 103,920
(Up 21,000) (Up £2000)

Mcilroy will have 70,000 by the time SPOTY is here.

You can see the difference in popularity. If just 10% of Mcilroys followers vote for him, he would probably win.

Anyway Cavendish will win it now.

The Odds today are now looking more like I expected them to be 2-3 weeks ago.

Best Priced odds:

13/8 Cavendish Now favorite with all bookies, his odds have been dropping slowly for a long time now. I think he will win.

2-1 Clarke Should not even be 2nd favorite, poor golfer for 99.9% of the year.

8-1 Mcilroy Played well all year, currently leading the Shaghai masters which could help his cause.

10-1 Farah The emotion involved with his runs at the World Champs will get him a few votes, has a chance.

25-1 Donald, the best Golfer this year, but no major, with 3 golfers bound to make the final 10, he will struggle for votes.

Wonder if Giggs will get it again this year? Bet BBC regret his previous win.

Got to be Dai Greene or Mo Farrah.

Had to look Cavendish up. Does that mean he isn't suitable for such a prize. Surely needs to be someone in the news a lot, for the right reasons of course.

You had to look Cavendish up, I guess you are exaggerating. Either that or you aren't that into sport.

Cavendish got 55,000 votes last year....thats a lot of votes for someone who is in a lesser Sport in terms of viewers/interest especially when he did not even win any cycling jerseys or medals.

This year he won the Green Jersey, A World Gold and the London 2012 Test event. So he has been in the headlines a lot throughout the year for all the right reasons. His profile has gone up hugely so he should at least double his votes.

You say Greene and Farrah, (BTW Greene has no chance) and you say it needs to be someone in the news a lot, both were in the news to a couple of days. Whereas Cavendish has been in the news throughout the year.

Sorry if this upsets the cycling nuts but realistically Cavendish would have to win the Tour de France to win SPOTY.

I doubt it. He has a fairly good chance but then again he DID win (his bit of) the Tour de France.

I don't follow cycling. I follow most other sports though, although i don't really follow athletics, only watch show piece events. I'm just going on what i've heard on the news. No disrespect to him and his achievements.

He was all over the Sports News for July, and then the Worlds..........

It will be a scandal of Bob Nudd proportions if he doesn't win it this year.

This will only be on the back page of newspapers for a day and maybe get a 10 second mention on the news (If he wins).....

But..."Rory McIlroy opens up three-shot gap at Shanghai Masters with fine 65, Rory McIlroy fired a third round 65 today to open up a three-stroke lead over American Anthony Kim at the Lake Malaren Shanghai Masters."

In terms of golfers all 3 of Clarke, Mcilroy and Donald will make the final 10 SPOTY contestants.

IMO in order of deserving the prize it should be:

Mcilroy, Consistent all year, US Open Winner.
Donald, Solid golfer, a few wins this year, World Number 1.
Clarke, 1 important win, poop rest of year.

The vote will be split between these 3, helping Cavendish to win it.

Mark Cavendish has just tweeted that he is doing a video shoot for SPOTY.........

The final 10 have not been selected yet....although its pretty obvious he will be in that 10.

Also a lot of BBC coverage/mentions of Fergusons 25 years at Man Utd.....Could he be getting some kind of award maybe even SPOTY itself, you were able to bet on him a few months back but now he is not available as a betting selection on any website......he has already won a lifetime acheivement award back in 2001.......

Would be a tad ironic when City go on to win the League and consign MU to being Manchester's second club

I am not sure he is suited to a 'Year Award' he has done amazing things for years but then again he has already got a 'Lifetime Award' so would not get another one as that would be pretty dumb.

There is a 'Coach of the year award' which he could get, but I expect that will go to the England Cricket Coach Andy Flower because of the strong success he has had but Ferguson would not be far behind (I cannot think of any other Coach's that have done anything this past year other than Ferguson and Andy Flower....

No more coach's in Footy or Cricket...Rugby, Tennis, Athletics, Golf, Lawn bowls deserve the award.......so that could be an award that Ferguson gets this year???

I am surprised the bookies have taken Ferguson down from the personality odds though....as that could be seen as easy money for them to take, maybe they took enough bets at 33-1 that they had to remove him altogether. If he gets into the top 10 he will win it which would screw me over.
