Is there going to be a 1K thread as well? I ventured into the gym for the first time in a long time yesterday and did a 1K stint, only at 7 admittedly but then I have done nothing bar swimming for a couple of years. Would like to see where I sit - think it was 3.53 I did it in.

Only Takeshi Kovacs with a 1K time so far (3.38) if memory serves. However, 'If you build it, they will come'

....probably :D

EDIT: You'd be somewhere between the relegation zone of The Championship & mid table mediocrity in Div 1. - In all likelihood you'd be pushing for promotion (approx. 8.00)

I can't get into this 2K row?? I've only just started at the gym and still pretty unfit. I can do 500m in 2.01 but don't have the stamina to do 2K.

Whats the best way to get up to 2K? Is it just do 500 one day then 600 another and slowly build myself up to the 2K?

If your doing 2.00 for 500m flatout, then you should probably be looking at doing 2min 30sec splits for each 500m for the 2K. This should feel comfortable and easy for the first 300-500m, then you need to block out the pain & concentrate on your breathing. By the time you get to 1800m some adrenalin (second wind) should kick in to get you over the line.

To summarise

> Steady even splits - use the pace boat display & try to stay ahead of it throughout
> Breathe out on the pull, breathe in as the rope retracts
> Sit upright & pull the rope nipple high (long deep pulls beat short fast ones)
> Get into a steady rhythmn
> The only person your trying to beat is yourself
> Give yourself an achievable target (both short term & long term)
> Save a little in reserve for a sprint finish

Shall I just go for the 2k tomorrow then and aim for 2.30 for each 500m......I need to concentrate on the breathing. I'll do it like you've said. I just start going for it, pay too much attention to the expected finish time and knacker myself by 500m

Its a tough challenge, but rewarding - even if you're crap at it like me

I'm 41, 6 foot 1, 17 & a half stone & never done Gym work until last September (was injured for half of November & December/January). If I can do a 2K row, then so can you

My long term aim is to get down to <16 stone & the competitive edge that timing adds keeps me going back even though my weight has barely changed - I feel fitter & stronger though so something is working

Muscle weights heavier than fat so that would suggest a change in body composition?

Started rowing down the gym about a month back as a variation on running and cycling. The main downside is there's no Sky Sports where the rowing machines are, so I usually go on the rowing machine after a 30 minute run/cycle. I've dropped my time from 8:30 to just under 8 minutes, but 7:30 looks a long, long way away  .

Current personal best for 2k on level 10 was 7:50.5 yesterday after a 5k run. Now I've seen this thread I'm going to go on the rowing machine first to see if there's any chance of getting near the 7:30 mark  . Although the  face will be how mine will be looking after this!

Welcome aboard Chocs, console yourself with this, in your quest for 7.30 - If you can shave 2.6 seconds off your time you will jump from 5th fastest FISOer to 3rd fastest 8-)

Don't just get straight on the rowing machine. You'll go a lot faster if you've done a 15 or 20 minute warm up and you've got your HR steadily up to 'race pace'.

Am mixing up weight training with sessions on the concept II on alternate days.

On the Concept am trying to do a variety of sessions. Today was just a fast timed 2000m, followed by a 1000m.

Thursday will be 8 * 500m in around the 1:50 mark each, with about a 2 minute break in between whilst my training buddy goes for it. Seem to be getting a decent bit fitter / stronger after only a week or so back. :D

resistance 10..............8.52.8

I nearly gave up on the last 500m as was completely knackered, but struggled on. I've sorted my breathing and technique just need to work on general fitness and stamina :D

Well pleased with that over to you Adrian to update that table. Takes me off bottom spot and up a division or two?

I should have tried that bit harder when inproving my time on saturday (see other thread). You've made my 8:56 joint bottom with PP.

I'm fine enough on the stamina and fitness (for 9 minutes anyway!), I just don't have the basic upper body strength to pull harder consistently.

I've got good leg strength but can't seem to work a technique that involves more pushing back with my legs than pulling with my arms/chest.
