Yes I like that one too Mike, quite a few of the old instrumental classics missing from you tube. Couldn't find an original for Duane Eddy - Peter Gun either.

Did find this one though

Wipeout - Surfaris

Take Five still sounds as good today as it did back then, class.

Iv'e always loved Herb Alpert's Casino Royale but no doubting that track comes from the 60's

All my favourites have already been bagged, but Acker Bilk's Stranger on the Shore is a good oldie. This arrangement is really cheesy but the clarinet playing is to die for ...

If anyone wants to hear more Al di Meola you should try some of his jazz/rock stuff, and where better to start than this 9-minute instrumental masterpiece, Land of the Midnight Sun. This is in my Top 10 tracks of all time (sadly the link is not a live performance, just the music). Amazing musicianship

Some cracking tracks here. :D
I love 'Stranger on the Shore', too, Billy. :)

A fav or two from my collection ....

Quincy Jones - Soul Bossa Nova

Benny Goodman & Orchestra - 'Sing, Sing, Sing'

Unknown Band (any help?) - Unknown Track - Great - but WARNING - NSFW!. Video contains (really great ) nudity - but all done in the BEST posible taste!
(Ok, not a hit, I don't think - but it should have been! :P )

Again .... not a hit .... but divine ....
Eric Satie - Gymnopedie No. 1.

This one was a hit, though ....
Perez Prado & his Orchestra - 'Guaglione'

Does any one know the name of an instrumental track used extensively during one of the Apollo missions of the late '60s, early '70s? I think it may have incorporated 'Thus Spake Zarathustra', but had a beat to it and modern organ (hammond?).

On one music web site it mentions that:

The opening Sunrise section of his symphonic Tone Poem Also Sprach Zarathustra was used as the main theme of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Since then it has been used on television for the Apollo Moon Missions and other inspirational endeavours, and formed the basis for a few rock cover versions.

It doesn't mention that it was an alternative version used for the moon stuff.

I shall search further.

Was just thinking of the Prez Prado Guiness one, mainly due to this advert

Think the other one is this track - Deodato - Also Sprach Zarathustra

Could it be this:

"Switched-On Bach was released in 1968 containing the Musical Genius of Bach, The enginering Genius of Robert Moog blended together brilliantly by Wendy Carlos. Great music and Fantastic sound Colours."

I think Deodato - Also Sprach Zarathustra may have been released in 1972.

Dont remember an instrumental as such but there was "In the year2525" Zager and Evans think

The theme from 2001 is "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (Thus Spake Zarathustra) - The Vienna Philharmonic, Herbert Von Karajan dont remember a hammond on it though but may have been

Ahh! That's the one! Many thanks, Hammertime, and thanks to spinynorman and mikeg13 for thinking for me!
This one's going on my video jukebox! :P

I was just ten in '72, and that's one name that passed me by. Can't think how else I'd have found it without you guys - and. believe me, I have looked for it before. Cheers! :D
It was used for the Apollo 16 tv coverage, I now think.

Btw, if you want to, you can save YouTube vids to your hard drive easily from this site:
http://www.videodownloadx.com/

Just remember to rename the file to .flv when you're downloading or after you've saved it. 8-)

Aye, Billy, she's a stunner, isn't she?

Brubeck

Post by SamD »

Two personal favourites by the Dave Brubeck Quartet:
(Dave Brubeck - piano, Paul Desmond - alto sax, Eugene Wright - bass, Joe Morello - drums)

Take Five (top ten in '61):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2In5a9LDNg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Unsquare Dance (1962):
maybe others will have more luck in locating a decent video performance of this...
From BBC today:

Slim Gaillard introduces the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet in a restored, re-edited 1964 programme at 19:30 on BBC4 tonight (Fri 27th). Songs include Take 5, the first jazz record to sell over one million copies.

Hope Unsquare Dance also features in the half-hour set; still not found a 'live' version online...

Well done for posting this, would have missed it, do hope others will try and see, Brubeck did as much as any to make jazz understandable (well to me at least) brilliant musicians
