Results don"t mean a lot at this stage of pre season it is always nice to win but it is more about fitness and trying get a few of your new players used to playing with the team . Arsenal like most team were not even close to the starting X1 they will play in the first game . .

That team is out of date Blockhead on my diary page and has been for at least two days . I only have one Everton player in my squad now and that was not because of the loss yesterday by Everton . I have only got Gabriel in my defence from Arsenal and i have changed my mind about bench boosting in week1 .

I do think reading too much into pre-season results can be a bit like using last week’s lottery numbers as a method of predicting this week’s. There is a bit of a sense of Arsenal’s key players either being injured or exhausted though, admittedly.

I looked up when Arsenal last retained the title, aware they never did so under Wenger, but didn’t imagine it would be more than 90 years ago A bit like with Liverpool last season, I’ve got a kind of a feeling they won’t win it again but am unconvinced by any of the other contenders too.

The only managers to win back-to-back titles in the PL era: Ferguson, Mourinho, Guardiola. Before that, you’re going back to Bob Paisley. That’s how difficult it is.

Well yeah, I meant Paisley was the last in pre-PL (though Fagan retained it in his first season succeeding him).

But Spurs never retained it, as far as I can see, in fact no team did so between Wolves in 1959 and Liverpool in 1977! So the earlier managers to have done so since WW2 are:

Stan Cullis - Wolves 1959
Matt Busby - Man Utd 1957
Bob Jackson - Portsmouth 1950

Pretty exclusive club (no Clough, Wenger, Shankly, Dalglish, Graham, Revie, Ramsay, I could go on…)

Everton got close 84-85 division 1 champions runnerup the year after and won the title again the year after sadly Everton never got chance to play the european cup in that period as all the english teams were banned from playing in europe which was a shame as Everton would have good chance of winning it then .

Yeah, Herbert Chapman I believe, who then went on to start another dynasty at Arsenal but died before he could become the first manager to win back-to-back titles with two different clubs (something still never done in English football).

A quick count up suggests there have been 28 successful title defences in 126 attempts, so 1 in every 4.5 years on average.
