We have made the semis in the curling with a game to spare (thanks to a couple of other teams also losing this afternoon). Shame this isn't like boxing or it would be an assured medal.

The lack of medals for China and also United States has been fixed.

I take the medal table from the bbc site, and they changed China to Peoples Republic of China and United States to United States of America. I've included the new names as options, but if they change another country's name, my spreadsheet won't recognise it.

Sorry for any confusion that may have arisen.

I remember Chinese Taipei/Taiwan caused some issues in the past, but don’t see either name on the list anyway for this one!

Got roundly thrashed in the third place match.

I’ve just got a feeling we’re not going to get a medal at all here… a few “hopes” but no bankers, like the outright favourites in the skeleton we’ve had the last few times. The full team curlers probably have a chance but it’s a hard slog to get there.

Come on Boris, build us some mountains so we can start dominating alpine skiing ;)

Let’s not try to make mountains out of molehills. Let’s look at the very flat and very unsnow like Netherlands and start building robots who can skate quickly.

A long track oval in the UK would be a start. Though they seem like a bit of a waste of space and energy unless you can make it part of a multi-purpose venue at least.

Speed skating used to be a bigger sport in the UK when it was mostly outdoors and we had big winter freezes.

Global warming 1 v 0 UK's Winter Olympic Medal Haul

I grew up in the flatlands (like Holland) and it was all designed to flood in winter (like Holland) and when that froze it made for great skating, they used to hold the British Championships near where I grew up. Not sure it even happened much any more when I was younger.....

The canals haven’t frozen over in Amsterdam since 2012. And it was an infamous gaffe by NBC’s Katie Couric in 2018 when she tried to explain to the watching American viewers that the reason Holland produce such good skaters was that everybody skates to work in the winter on the frozen canals. She got suitably mocked on social media.

The Dutch have moved on with indoor arenas - we haven't.

The canals won't freeze that often as they are in cities and so a few degrees warmer than open ground (a bit like the Thames!)

As I said though, a 400m ice track isn’t exactly the most cost-effective and mass usage focused thing to put in an indoor arena.

Tradition counts for a lot though, fair enough. You could build a speed skating track in Delhi, or a curling rink in Rio… but given they’re not cold weather countries that at least historically had natural ice, they’ll never become sports of national significance. Though some of the newer sports e.g. snowboarding are producing success in countries where their dry land skating equivalents are popular.

So, we need another little ice age and for the Thames to freeze again 😊

We’ll need to, as our best medal hope flopped in the snowboard cross. Bit of a lottery, that event, rather like the short track skating that we pinned our hopes on so often in the past.

Remarkable though to see Lindsey Jacobellis win it, 16 years after doing a Devon Loch at the final jump with the gold medal at her mercy in one of the most infamous Winter Olympic moments. I said Elise Christie should have kept trying…
