Emma on the verge of history, I'm not aware of a qualifier making a Grand Slam final and she is just one match away from doing so.

Didn’t realise she was Welsh, trampie (why else would you post?) ;)

Remarkable achievement anyway, after showing her potential at Wimbledon so it’s clearly no fluke, and has a shot at going all the way with no clear favourite. Think she’s the first qualifier to get this far at the US Open at least. If she can avoid injury she could have a great career.

Best previous qualifiers

1977 Wimbledon SF, John McEnroe

1997 French Open SF, Filip Dewulf(ranked 122)

2000 Wimbledon SF, Vladimir Voltchkov (ranked 237

Being a qualifier she has already won more matches than the champion usually does.

Anyway definitely Welsh (although technically born outside of Wales in Canada with a technically non-Welsh Mum (Chinese) and a technically non-Welsh Dad (Romanian)).

And without losing a set… though why are the women still not playing 5-set matches? (Although maybe it’s the men who should reduce it to 3, to stop Djokovic winning every time…)

with that heritage she could definitely qualify to play rugby for Wales

Not quite sure she’s built for it, though it’s amazing what they can do with “supplements” these days…

Jack Charlton would have got her into the Ireland footie team

Emma into the final in straight sets, if she wins it I wonder if she will win sports personality of the year as well, pity the US open is not on terrestrial TV though.

Remarkable, surely they can get TV coverage arranged (not sure if it’s 2am again though…)

And in the final, she will play another Canadian-born teenager of mixed heritage. Who could have predicted that?

Both unseeded too.

Last 2 teenagers to meet in a final; Serena Williams and Martina Hingis. They turned out ok....

Hingis was already past it by the time Serena emerged! Peaked at about 17…

She’s still only 40 now. Less than a year older than Federer…

Anyway, regarding TV… surely there’s nobody left without Amazon Prime after all these months of lockdowns and working from home? Nice to have an additional benefit beyond next-day delivery of anything on the planet (well, I did watch Vikings as well but that’s finished now…)

Just turn off those news/sport app alerts though, or you’ll find out the result 5 minutes before you see it. And definitely avoid in-game betting!

Think it was only in doubles (may still be playing in veterans type events - after all, her namesake was still going at 60-odd!)

It seemed to be the trend at one stage for young female players, burn out and retire early before making a brief but sometimes glorious comeback.

Excellent (9pm k.o.)

C4's paralympics coverage was awful, 5 minutes of action, broken up by interviews and ad breaks in equal measure. Let's hope they at least save the ad breaks for the change of ends.

Seems like C4 are just streaming Amazon, so that's a great deal for Amazon (they've been paid to advertise on national TV) and good for us (we don't have to worry about dodgy C4 directing).

Yeah, I put it on some days and seemed to get more breaks than live action! Though how much was down to them versus the budget of the host broadcaster I’m not sure.

They did seem to show more of Tokyo itself than the BBC’s Olympic coverage though, where the only shot of the city we really got was the studio wall shot with the Red Eiffel Tower…
