Most selected 2021/22

Post by Darbyand »

Day after game launch...there's a lot of auto pick players getting decent %ages around the 10% mark but these are the early popular picks that I reckon are mostly done on purpose.

Will Kane, Shaw and co be ready for Day 1?

A lot spotted the Ben White bargain I see, assuming he signs. Mind you we've had regular Arsenal defenders that cheap before who haven't proved VFM!

For those looking at TAA, he played a 30 minute early pre-season game OK yesterday (as did Matip. VvD and Gomez not quite ready yet).

Not much change bar a slip from Kane, probably on the news he'd miss the first game (and maybe 2 more if he's in a transfer "saga")

I'm still trying to get my head around this Grealish thing. He's a great provider of assists but who will he be assisting?

He'll be assisting the first team by handing out bottles at half time etc.

EDIT Just read Pep has said Bilva and 2 or 3 others want to leave (and he is not after Messi) so may be some first team chances after all. I'm still not buying him!

Foden and KdB will surely drop down the lists now (see Injury thread).

I think in tournament summers the best bet is to pick an XI who you're pretty sure will give you 33 games before the international break then assess at that point...if it needs 2/3/4 transfers to fix it then, so be it.

I think this is where I am. Easier said than done though. I think I’m reasonably on top of the injury situation but the returning players state of fitness is a minefield. I’ve not tried to pick a team without any of the Euro/Copa players yet but it might not look too hot and require a lot of subsequent transfers. Then you’ve got the end of August transfer deadline issue too, albeit that might not have quite as many implications now

Gauge of fitness-

Liverpool just played 2 * 60 minute games. Those who had trained all of pre-season had 60 minutes whereas the Brazilians, who only started training last weekend, got 30 minutes before being subbed. Some who returned late(ish) after early summer cup exits (plus injury returnees including VvD) had 45 minutes. Henderson (only England squad member) hasn't been on the summer camp so wasn't there but has just started training on Merseyside. Similarly, I think Kane was only supposed to start training today (at Spurs - if he turns up)

More friendlies still to play for most clubs (2*90 minutes for Liverpool, probably different teams) so I think everyone should be back next weekend but English(/Italians) unlikely to start and Brazilians and a few others are probably most at risk of not getting 90 on day 1. Being match fit and up to form is a different question.

Shaw and Maguire start for United today in their final pre season game. Lingard has Covid.

I'm kind of surprised how popular Shaw is at the moment. I know he did well at the Euros, but in TFF he's not a sure thing imo.

Hard for me to be objective on United BUT I think Varane will put 5+ clean sheets on last season's total, he is that good/Lindelof is that bad. Shaw is fitter than ever, is now taking corners and free kicks (crosses not shots) plus providing a lot of the attacking from the left wing. Telles is injured too at the moment. On the down side he'll miss Rashford whilst he's out, and Sancho will be expected to balance the attacking threat so there's more coming down the right.

Shaw was excellent all last season not just the Euros. With Varane coming in alongside his popularity isn't that much of a surprise to me tbh.

Most Euros players will probably dip in form at least but, for some reason, I think Shaw will start well. My hunch is based on thinking he is a confidence player who has bounced back from the Mourinho saga and is still on a good wave.

Whoever takes the penalties, as long as they don’t miss them…

The City line up didn’t make things any easier for me. Mahrez may well be nailed on now for the first few games but it would not surprise me if City start slow as the big guns return. They play Sunday too so no help with the starting line up.

I’m not loving any of the teams I coming up with  Probably going to have to embrace a 5+ transfer August.

If I can get a cheap Leicester def in then I will probably go with Shaw based on what has been said above.

Not a lot happening here in terms of big shifts in ownership, looks like battle lines are drawn ahead of the new season. Ings creeping in.. he might fill a Kane gap for me and leave £1.1m in the bank until September.

Nah Johnners. I like the sh*t or bust approach. If you’ve picked well you will be in splendid isolation on your own at the top of the league. He who dares Rodney!

I’m still going round in circles…

Will be interesting to see how many go for Lukaku. I'm tempted by him, but would be instead of Bruno. Remains to be seen if Lukaku can get on penalties, but not certain with Jorginho doing so well last season, although maybe Pickford has shown the way to save the hop, skip and jump approach. That may still make Bruno a better bet as he should still be on penalties you would think.

I’ve just spotted that I’ve got 10 of the current top 14 most selected. I’m nothing if not unimaginative.

Took this at kick off last night. A real lack of consensus this season which is good. Kane will come up of course when his position is sorted but looking at the scoring from last night's game the changes should throw up more leftfield options.

Read this morning that Mo Salah has scored in the first game of the season 4 years on the bounce. If he does it again today he'll be the first (ever? PL era?) to do it 5 times, which would annoy 55% of teams.
