Pele famously scored 1000 goals... but some of them were in the back garden or on the beach, seemingly. Officially 767, level with Ronaldo and slightly above Messi (and they both have their twilight years in America to boost their stats still to come...)

But he set the world alight as a teenager at the 58 World Cup?

Probably one of the best Pele clips is his foul on Rodney Marsh in the American league in the mid 70s 😂

Well yeah, winning the World Cup as a teenage prodigy and as a (comparative) veteran is perhaps the thing that has set him apart from others.

Wasn’t that Archie McShitt of Port Vale? (referencing a legendary chain email from the 90s...)

Maradona, Papa Bouba Diop and now Paolo Rossi... what a couple of weeks for losing World Cup legends prematurely.

Anyway, I’m slightly too young to remember the 1982 World Cup, but I’ve sometimes thought about how much I would have hated Paolo Rossi had I watched that tournament as a child. Taking out that glorious Brazilian side who would surely have seemed like the only fitting winners at the time (as opposed to being a bunch of over-rated show-ponies who achieved nothing apart from a few “Youtube-worthy” goals, looking at it with historical objectivity).

I might have even found myself supporting the Germans in the final, as per 1990... then again, Schumacher, and the French who were probably the football purists’ second choice... not sure I’d have bothered watching it at all, to be honest!

Eventually... didn’t they draw every game in the group stage and sneak through? :?

Yep. The Group had all matches drawn. I think Poland were in it...

France were the other good side and you wouldn't have supported Germany in Final vs anyone after Schumacher.... I think that was the WC with the dodgy draw to get Algeria knocked out.

England weren't bad in it, beating France in 1st Group match, but Greenwood bottled it and brought Keegan and Brooking back for W Germany in 2nd Group Stage and they missed a couple of open goals between them.

What is it about Schumachers and heavy-handed tactics? We’ll soon see if young Mick measures up...

Rossi was brilliant at Espana 82. Although he is another one tainted as a cheat after the match fixing ban (not that I cared much about that as a kid then), conveniently massively reduced so he could play in Spain.

I don't remember the details of the Match Fixing bring reported much, nor other players bring named.

But yes he was amazing after the 1st Group Stage and I've never seen a CF play as well as he did vs Brazil.
