If we rank English clubs on historic performance, 2 points for a European Cup/Champions League and 1 for a lesser Euro competition, we have:
Liverpool 15
Man Utd 8
Chelsea 5
Forest 4
Tottenham 3
Villa 2
That’s your six, then. Sorry, City...

Re: English league structure: revamp
If we rank on % of European club games won, or on goals scored per game, or why not a combo of both, then I think you'll find a new member of the 6 and top in fact

UEFA CL
'Historic performance' is more likely to be based on a club's UEFA coefficient, ie its performance in Europe over latest five years. The Bert Kassies site shows current rankings: https://kassiesa.net/uefa/data/method5/trank2021.htmlon 4 Feb wrote: . . . new Uefa proposals for expanded European club competitions post-2024 would potentially see six English clubs in the Champions League — the top four plus two upgraded on historic performance . . .
Also being discussed today is condition that the team upgraded to CL would need to finish domestic league season in fifth to seventh place.

Not sure how really if 6 get in and they have to finish top 7.bspittles wrote:And so making it harder still for teams outside the top six to break into the big time
A lesser club only misses out if they finish 5th to 7th which wouldn't get in now! Plus, that only applies if no other lesser club finishes up there.

Re: English league structure: revamp
Because it is now easier for a “big” club to have a bad season but still play in the elite European competition, and therefore get more money to establish themselves further as a “big” club.murf wrote: ↑05 Feb 2021, 20:06Not sure how really if 6 get in and they have to finish top 7.bspittles wrote:And so making it harder still for teams outside the top six to break into the big time
