Albums of the year 2019
Apart from FontainesDC,s Dogrel and Nick Cave’s Ghosteen (plus an honourable mention for the Pixies best album since their reformation) it’s felt very much like a year for the female singer / songwriter, with great albums from Lana del Rey, Sharon Von Etten, Weyes Blood and in particular FKA Twigs.
Favourite for me at the moment probably Magdalene by FKA Twigs, what about you?

Re: Albums of the year 2019
Struggling to find one worthy of the title.
I liked Dogrel but not sure it is sufficiently worthy. Was Idles latest one this year?? - was pretty good too but they lack something I can't put my finger on. Pixies was very 'meh' and can't even bring myself to buy the Nick Cave one as I've heard bits and read reviews and it just sounds boring. Shame as he is a god. Even Kate Tempest bought out her dullest album yet.
Seen a few end of year reviews and none of them are on my list

Re: Albums of the year 2019
Just going back over the year and I must mention the return ('Encore') by The Specials.
A momentous occasion and very, very good in places but just too patchy (covering their 'own' Fun Boy 3 song was totally pointless and unrewarding)
6 Music list - another giving it to Fontaines DC
NME - mostly never heard of rubbish by a website trying to remain 'relevant' now nobody buys their paper (do they even still print it?) / sorry, no relevance to me as I'm an old bloke now.

Re: Albums of the year 2019
Indeed - my top album by a stretch, and a genuinely unique listen, have played it 40 or 50 times this year and still have it on rotation. i've seen reviews comparing it to Slint, Daughters, Idles, Fugazi, Bloc Party, and even Trout Mask Replica - but guessing that many won;t have heard it at all (although it gets some plays on radio 6, it's never going to get much airtime on more conventional stations), hoping that my description of a bustard child of "red" era King Crimson and the Fall doesn't put people off. Although it might confuse.

Re: Albums of the year 2019
I’m still catching up on some end-of-year lists (eg the promising black midi) but my favourite albums over the year so far include:
Weyes Blood – Titanic Rising /Beautiful songs, beautifully sung. As it says on Spotify, she’s futuristic and ancient at the same time
Ider – Emotional Education /Gorgeous harmonies from female duo; London
Peter Perrett – Humanworld /The Only Ones frontman returns with an excellent second solo album
Chrissie Hynde – Vale Bone Woe /Jazzy lounge music from another 70s/80s veteran
Clairo – Immunity /Her debut; lush sound, great voice; Boston
Tool – Fear Inoculum /Heavy prog rock. Not usually my thing, but this is fabulous
Caroline Polachek – Pang /Atmospheric electro-pop; Brooklyn
Jenny Lewis – On the Line /Her fourth solo album since fronting Rilo Kiley
Vampire Weekend – Father of the Bride
Lana Del Ray – Norman F***** Rockwell /Yet another great album from LDR. Is there no end to this?
Sheryl Crow – Threads /I could say the same for Sheryl C, but this is supposedly her valedictory album
The National – I am Easy to Find /Back to form for the shoegazers
King Princess – Cheap Queen /A bit like Pink, or a more soulful Christina Aguilera
The Delines – The Imperial /Country soul from Oregon
Jade Jackson – Wilderness /Vocally, sounds like Kirsty MacColl; musically, more Lucinda Williams

Re: Albums of the year 2019
Never really thought I liked Lana Del Rey but NFR is a great album. I guess I’d never really listened to the lyrics so much n her earlier stuff. Might have to listen to some of the back catalogue
Just listening to Brittany Howard now. Jaime is definitely one for the best of 2019 list.
Also agree about SlowThai.
Dave’s psychodrama is also great. Was that 2019 or the end of ‘18?

Well you're spoilt for choice with Lana del Ray - her previous three albums are all very good (and they're each an hour long, with no fillers). Maybe start with Ultraviolence (2014), then Honeymoon (2015). Happy listening!
