Seaside Break

Post by Ashers »

Afternoon,

Any suggestions on a seaside break?

Looking to go for around four days around Easter and ideally in the South-West / Wales.

Had a few days in South Wales last week (working but free during day). The Gower Peninsula is fantastic for beaches. Not full of slot machines and chippies but plenty of actual sand and bays etc. Must be the best area for actual beaches in the UK.

Pembrokeshire also good but then so is most of the South West of England!

Depends what you want as to what/where you should pick....

+1 for The Gower - some of the best beaches around. Rhossilli is just stunning. Never gets too busy either, although that's partly because it's not the easiest to get to, especially last summer when they were repairing the (steep) footpaths down to the beach. The walk to Worms head is great as well. 3 cliffs bay is also great, and there are loads of others - everything from stony beaches for beach fires, big waves, sheltered secluded bays and vast acres of sand.

Pembrokeshire also great and you can take your pick, from Whitesands bay, the gorgeous Marloes sands and the headline grabbing Barafundle, which has to be up there with Rhossilli as one of the best in Britain. Loads of smaller ones to explore as well, and you've got Tenby for the more traditional seaside break (pretty nice beaches and not a bad town either)

Or Cornwall. take your pick, from Perran's bar-on-the-beach, volleyball courts and chip shops (plus a great pool on top of the rocks), quieter gems like Portreath, scenic Marazion, Beautiful Sennen and my favourite - Godrevey

How many are going, and what ages? What kind of accomodation would you prefer?

Just me and Jessica. 32 & 34, but she is five months pregnant.

Looking at a hotel ideally.

Carlyon Bay hotel is nice. Near St Austell, with Eden Project at Penwithick not far if its rainy, Charlestown's a nice little fishing village and Mevagissey and the lost gardens of Heligan not far either. Don't bother with Carlyon bay itself though - been a building site for as long as I can remember.

Or Rock is pretty nice for a couple. Can get the ferry over to visit Padstow for a bite to eat at one of Rick Stein's many places there.

Depends what you like doing really.

Very pleased with initial advice and going to have a look.

Looks like some very nice places and have fallen for Barafundle.

Back after four days in Brixham / Paignton.

Brixham is a lovely little fishing town and although you can walk around it in less than a day, there is plenty of other stuff to see nearby.

A lovely coastal walk to Berryhead, crab fishing, day trips to Torquay, Paignton Zoo (although Paignton itself seem rough and didn't think much of the beach there) and a fantastic railway trip on a steam train to Dartmouth followed by a steam cruiser on the River Dart.

On the way back went to Badger's Holt and walked around Dartmoor National Park.

If anyone ever wants to go to Paignton, I would highly recommend Ashleigh Guesthouse and the award winning breakfast.

Fantastic! Did 2 weeks in the areas a couple of years ago having never been down that way and loved it. Salcombe is worth a trip next time you go. Crabbing is potentially the most relaxing thing ever!
