new car needed: best car for £1k
So, I think my astra has had it, spark plug broken off and entered the cylinder, its last rites I think
Driver for 13 years and never spent more than £1k on a car.
Requirements:
- Petrol (but as fuel efficient as possible)
- Safe for my toddler, 4/5 door
Taking Ford Focus/Astra as read - anything else I might think of?

lower servicing costs, cheaper when things go wrong. Cheaper to buy.
Don't do enough miles 8,000ish to justify the extra cost...

No expert but Skoda and Peugeot worthy of a mention. Lagunas are dirt cheap and you get a lot of car for your money but are prone to problems.
Would you consider going to an auction?

The likes of Ford, Vauxhall, VW hold their value better so you would get a newer Skoda for £1k than Ford etc etcWilBert wrote:No expert but Skoda and Peugeot worthy of a mention.
(though I'd personally be happier with a 10 year old Golf than a 6 year old Skoda)

Is it just me or does the Skoda not still have the crappy tag as when I was a kid? Sure they've improved but the badge still says Skoda.
The ultimate put down in the 80's was 'Your dad drives a Skoda!'

That's the reason why they are cheaper than the quality of the car should price them. Skoda is owned by Volkswagen and share many parts.

Even though the Skoda shares the same platform and mechanicals as the Golf?murf wrote:The likes of Ford, Vauxhall, VW hold their value better so you would get a newer Skoda for £1k than Ford etc etcWilBert wrote:No expert but Skoda and Peugeot worthy of a mention.

Toyota Corolla - run forever and reasonably cheap to maintain imo.
Just so happens I have one for sale.
It is 13 years old but has 1 lady driver (my wife) about 70000m and burns a bit of oil but runs like my dear old mother on laxatives.

Lancs is a bit far to go for a Corolla (they are on my shortlist though)

Its like Top Gear for me when they do a car reliability challenge, the Astra is parked up - and I've had to borrow my dads 1994 Escort. Grim.

If it's speed you are after then have you considered the Koenigsegg Agera R?

I do like the almost anti-car Dacia Sandero - £5995 for wind-up windows and no radio!

The son of a Dacia owner would say "your Dad drives a Skoda" with a look on his face combining awe and envy.tommymooney wrote:

Would you ever touch a car with this kind of mileage?
I do 8,000 a year - so if I got two years out of it then had to scrap it, I'd be happy enough...

I have a Dacia Sandero. Absolute bargain if you spend another £500 on the next trim level.tommymooney wrote:

Re: new car needed: best car for £1k
As it's a diesel then no problem, previous car (Mondeo Ghia 2l) had something like 186k on the clock, put another 40k on it in 3 years (including a run from the UK to Finland and back), exhaust dropped off 2 days before it's last MoT was due, took that as a sign to get shot of it.tommymooney wrote:http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... 178365876/

yes, its hard to get past the old 100,000 rule - which was a limit 20 years ago...

Are you dead set on the smaller cars? I'd prefer a 7/8yo bigger car than a 12yo smaller car, higher running costs though.

the running costs do worry me a bit, but if anything major needs doing (i.e. more than an exhaust) its usually throw away time anyway.
Only 3 years no claims, so insurance cost a concern on the larger cars too.

Re: new car needed: best car for £1k
How did you find your Astra prior to it's death? I had one once, it drove like a brick! Followed it with a Rover 416 that did a job for a couple of years for £500, the missus had a 214 when we met, also cheap and did okay for her.tommymooney wrote:the running costs do worry me a bit, but if anything major needs doing (i.e. more than an exhaust) its usually throw away time anyway.

Of the 3 cars you've posted the more recent MoT would count higher for me.

Re: new car needed: best car for £1k
Bought the astra for £1k off a mate 2 1/2 years ago. Got £275 for it (as long as the buyer pays up) - so 16,000 miles for £750 isn't bad.
I had the 8 valve version, which is slow, the 16v should have a bit more pep.

Re: new car needed: best car for £1k
My first car was a fiat. Close me £100, sold it 25,000 miles later for £80. Had to take the air filter out when it had a spell of cutting out and stuck a water pump from a mini (from a scrapyard) on it as a backup, but apart from that it cost me nothing

I posted this earlier partly as a joke
Any Fiso friends can have a look at £800 which is £200 less than I have been offered in part exchange but I can save the difference with no trade in.
pm me if you need complete details
