It was a belter of a read. I could hardly put it down and have lent it out to 4 other people since.

WWI and WWII books always grab my attention.
Not really my favourite genre, but in a similar vein I guess, I have read:

Stasiland - Anna Funder
Stalingrad - Simon Beevor
Schindler's Ark - Thomas Keneally

That's about it for War related books.

That's certainly it for War related books beginning with 'S' :-)

Not read a lot of war books either.

All Quiet on the Western Front is the Daddy
The Naked and the Dead is also excellent
Does Slaughterhouse 5 count?
Mila 18 is excellent (and also notable for being the reason that Catch 22 was called catch 22 - it was going to be called catch 18 originally)
Birdsong
A Farewell to Arms
And Schindler as above (never seen the film though)

You've just re-kindled (excuse the pun) my memory, and of course I've also read Mailer's 'The Naked And The Dead', though my all time Mailer favourite is The Executioner's Song. I also forgot about reading the Regeneration Trilogy, which would qualify as war related. Slaughterhouse 5 has also been read, and while I'm at it, I guess Catch-22 would qualify for me.

Oh, and Cold War related, books by Tom Rob Smith like Child 44, The Secret Speech etc might also qualify.

Lord of Chaos
A Crown of Swords
The Path of Daggers
Winter's Heart
Crossroads of Twilight
Knife of Dreams
The Gathering Storm
Towers of Midnight
A Memory of Light

Started this series back in the early 90s and after a long, long break I started more or less where I left off and am now on "The Gathering Storm"

Oddly enough I am also starting on Pratchett in between the Jordan books

I envy you that.

Stick to the Discworld series (adult ones). The first couple are a little episodical (and maybe a tad silly as Rincewind has one misadventure after another??) but they soon turn into really good, stand alone, deeper, single stories with a very high standards especially from about book 3 or 4 onwards (maybe slightly patchy in the later ones but you are a long way off that).

I started with the Tiffany Witch books which are the childrens books. I have most of Discworld on my Kindle so will work through them

I have just finished the latest book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. I really enjoyed them and am now thinking of finding another book or series of books within the same genre.
Would you recommend the Wheel of Time series as a good one to start on ?

I was going to suggest maybe staring with the Samoan's and working your way up.

Wheel of Time is a good series but can get a bit long winded at times. It is a bit different to the GOT stuff in that it has Trollocs and other monsters but its a good read and I would recommend it.

They are a good counter-balance to each other depending on mood I think.

Hornet - I agree with Surprised, Jordan can spend chapters describing glares, stares, anger states, clothing cuts, accents, scenery, architecture and is very slow at times with too many threads being opened up which really makes you loose the will to live.

That said they are a great read; beautifully and lovingly crafted even if a bit over indulgent, hence the length between books. There is a prequel which you could read first or after a few books in.

Raymond Feist's Magician series might be a decent shout for you, the first book is a standalone so you're not committed to a whole series.

Seems like a few here like their Fantasy novels. Wonder if any of you might like the harder edged sci-fi by the likes of Richard Morgan (the excellent Altered Carbon) and Neal Asher.

OK read loads of books some listed on here - and I have recommended some books on here before by this author (altho 1 or 2of his I have struggled with) the book i'm currently reading Community by Graham Masterton is tremendous 3/4 way through in 4 days.
I've got White Bones by same author to start next.

Although I've recommended books by Simon Kernick before I found both Siege and Target rather written to a formula and not as gripping as some of his earlier stuff - which I have recommended previously.

Having seen his 1 man show altho' not a fan of madness despite owning most single output of their hits. I look forward to reading Suggs autobiography.

Also on waiting list for Mark Halsey's Added Time.
Obviously Lee Child's new Jack Reacher book will be worth a read. Buy it or join a long waiting list at your library.

Don't even listen to music when running. Don't like wearing / carrying anything apart from the essentials.
