Device for detecting electric wiring or plumbing pipes

Post by cheshire cat »

Sorry for posting this thread in pub talk, but there isn't a DIY forum, so there.
I want to avoid killing myself when drilling into walls, so I need one of those wiring, plumbing detectors (like a metal detector). I know they won't work on plastic plumbing.
Anyone know what these devices are actually called?
I've typed 'drill', 'wall', 'detect' and 'electric' into google, but get loads of crap results.
Has anyone used one? Any recommendations? How much should I pay?

Have you tried hammering small nails into the wall where you suspect there may be wiring or piping :?:

No, but it's probably best if you shower first and don't dry yourself, before hammering the nails. That way you'll also know when you're "close" to wiring. ;-)

I have just followed all advice on this forum and I'd like to report...successfully drilled SIX holes into a wall splattered with a death trap electrical cable network.....why?...well.....

a) to put up a totally impractical plate rack my fine wife bought on ebay

b) pls the wife

c) ruin my weekend

d) accumulate brownie points for the near future

Thanks guys!
