FISO F1 Style League 26/27 - Division 2 thread

Rules are the same as last year as sprint format stays the same as it fits more to our comp (even though it is different in actual F1, it is simpler here to divide it by 2 gameweeks). Additionally - we only have 18 drivers not 20 this year.

Before I go on, I want to also add that I reserve the rights to twist some things around if needed.


FORMAT - QUALIFICATION/RACE STRUCTURE

To imitate F1 more, the FPL 38 gameweeks will be split in qualification and race gameweeks - basically all odd numbered gameweeks will be qualification, while the following gameweek will be actual race (it doesn't matter if any fall in weekend, have less games or double gameweeks etc). The difference will be that for race gameweeks top 10 players will get points - while for qualifcation no points will be given (except if it will be spring race which I will also add in some of the gameweeks (will post fixtures in another post) - then top 8 get points for overall standings).

While it would seem that having whole gameweek for only qualification is boring, here comes the additional twist - to make this gameweek matter more and imitate the placement structure of f1, then each team will get extra "FPL points" which will be added to your FPL score of the race gameweek.

SCORING

So as mentioned before, scoring for the sidegame will be made like this (your FPL score minus points deducted for "paid" FPL transfers is used for calculations in all situations - same as in H2H leagues etc):

Qualification

Players do not get any points for the overall standings of the sidegame. Instead they got what I will call "FPL points" that are added into the score of the next gameweek's race weekend.
"FPL points" are awarded on the basis of your standings for the qualification gameweek:

1st place - 20 FPL points
2nd place - 19 FPL points
3rd place - 18 FPL points
---
20th place - 1 FPL point

I know in some cases this might seem like a lot if all participants are similarly skilled FPL players, but its the same in actual F1 - Pole position in qualifying does give you huge advantage over 20th place (I actually considered making it more FPL points, but I think this is enough and simple to follow)

Sprint race

Rules stay the same as last year. It will be held on some gameweeks in the season in place of qualification. Same scoring as qualification applies regarding FPL points, but additionally top 8 racers get points for overall standings - 1st place 8 points, 2nd place 7 .... 8th place 1 (same as in F1)

Race

Here the scoring imitates actual Formula One. Top 10 get points:

I hope this explains the idea - the format is quite simple, scoring easy to understand and does not require additional work from any of you. Only what I can not currently guarantee is instant updates per each gameweek - I will try, but sometimes I might post results for few gameweeks at once. I'll try to make it interesting, but lets see.

Top 3 drivers at the end of the season will be promoted do Division 1


TIE-BREAKER FOR OVERALL STANDINGS
Given that it can be possible that drivers have same points at the end of the season, then in such case tie-breaker will be applied - who got most wins -> who got most podiums -> who got most top 10 places. I will not apply it throughout the season, only at the end of it, if needed (while the season is ongoing it will be shown as split places and in the races itself no tiebreakers will be applied).

Short preview introduction:
Both Red Bull drivers got promoted so this here is a completely new roster, so not comparing team's performance of last year, but only about drivers- jeffersn finished 13th last season and had just 2 podiums and no wins - he really has not managed to improve much in last seasons and has not been in contention for promotion, so not much is expected this season either, but at the same time maybe with new team for him and new teammate it is finally time for him to turn his luck around too?
He is joined by newcomer Redsnout - while we do not know yet how he will do, by the records in FPL we can expect a serious contender here who will try and fight for promotion straight from the get go, so will definitely be interesting to see what he brings to the table!

TEAM - Ferrari

Short preview introduction:
jimmy ching, who debuted one season before last in 15th place, managed to improve significantly as he finished 7th - while he was quite far from promotion spots, he found serious improvement and if the trajectory continues this year maybe he can fight for top 6 spots or with luck even top 3? hard to say now - he got 4 podiums last year, but none of those were wins, so at the moment it is not expected, but it is only for him to prove us wrong. His new teammate is Stena Bib - a newcomer who has had some great seasons in FPL in past, but also had some flops, so it is very hard to say what will happen this time - from one side both drivers could do quite well, but on the other hand - we do need to first see how consistently they can provide good results.
Ferrari finished last season 3rd and were not too far away from the number 1 spot, but at the same time this season they have a new driver - at the moment it is expected that he will show the same or even better results than last year's promoted Britinus, but it is very hard to say, so lets see what the season brings.

TEAM - Mercedes

Short preview introduction:
For chris2k_11 this will be his third season, just like for his teammate - while he did do quite well in first year, last season he finished only 17th and while he had one win, it was his only podium, so this time around it is really hard to predict what he will bring to the table. Certainly the potential is there, but if he wants to be able to fight for promotion he need to bring out something much more impressive than previous season. He is joined by The Real Slim Shady, who did manage to get another top 10 finish in his second season - this time in 8th spot. While he did not fight for the promotion really, he did make stable performances and got 3 podiums - the problem is, he never finished higher than 3rd place.
Mercedes is having same roster for third year in a row and while first was quite decent, last year they finished only 6th - not really fighting for top 3 spots. Potential is certainly there to improve, but to really see if that will happen we need to wait.

TEAM - McLaren

Short preview introduction:
Ralfbergs has been dropping in places in each of last seasons, after he got relegated - last year he finished 11th. Still, this time around he will try to bring his best and hopefully the car improvements will be good enough too. He is in a team still with topspur, who had shown great results in season before last, but last year had a season to forget - finishing only 16th and getting 2 podiums, but no wins. So while topspur has shown great promises in past, his form, just like his teammate's, has been dipping. For both drivers they will definitely try to end this drop in form and bring back the results that made them fight for the top 6 spots rather than be in second half of the leaderboard.
McLaren finished 8th last season and basically their performances were quite mediocre - being just good enough to not be completely bad. Season before that they did finish 4th, so yeah, quite a big variance and lets see what they bring to the races this time.

TEAM - Alpine

Short preview introduction:
S_sutton87 has not had the best of results in last seasons - he finished 15th last year and before that also did not manage to get a top 10 finish - he did get a win and 3 podiums total which sound like quite decent result, but overall he has been very inconsistent and bookmakers are not really expecting much more from him this season, based on his past stats. He is joined by yorkshiredragon, who got relegated from top division and got two podiums last season there. It is hard to tell what he will bring to the table in Division 2 - will he prove that he is Division 1 material still or end up in similar places like his teammate? At the moment top 10 seems like the current prediction, but not promotion spots, but also not as bad results as last year - but we will see better within time.
Alpine as a team finished 7th last year and while it is expected that they finish around middle of the table again most likely, it is very doubtful that they will bring a surprise performance and fight for top 3 spots.


TEAM - Racing Bulls

Short preview introduction:
Blue Fire improved significantly last year, finishing 9th after a season where he was only 16th. He was not too far away from top 6, but at the same time was not really in the promotion fight. He got 3 podiums, out of which one was a win and two second places, so actually quite great results, but at the same time his inconsistency to get good results cost him overall to get a higher position. He is joined for the second year with Oxford NZ, who had a great season and finished 6th - while promotion ended up out of his reach, he certainly brings great potential to fight for it this season, so lets see what happens.
Racing Bulls finished 4th last season and basically were the number 1 team out of the rest - with that I mean that top 3 teams were with significantly higher points, but Racing Bulls did manage to get top spot out of the rest. If both drivers improve this season then top 3 should be in reach at the minimum or maybe even something more?


TEAM - Haas

Short preview introduction:
Mystery debuted last season and just like it was predicted - did not show much impressive stats, but at the same 14th place for debut season is not that bad - he did get a win and one more podium. At the same time - it is hard to expect much better results from him this year based on the first performance, but too early to tell. RomynPG is his teammate and as he debuted last season quite good results were expected, but it ended up being wrong - he finished 19th - he did get a win and one more podium, but the rest of his results were quite bad, not really bringing many points to his total.
Haas finished 9th last season and did not really show much - so the feeling is that they will not improve much more than that, but at the same time - given their results the improvement is still expected as it should not be too hard to at least improve a bit compared to how bad it was.

TEAM - Aston Martin

Short preview introduction:
bluelionman finished 18th last season and had a season to forget - he is really prepared this season and has even built a case that it was a serious fluke and he could fight for the promotion, so lets see what happens this time around - he did get two podiums, out of which one was a win, last year, so yet another driver in the roster who lacks consistency but with improvement could fight for something much more. He is joined by woody71, who got relegated before previous season and actually was not too far for a return - he finished 5th last season. woody71 had 4 podiums and 2 wins and certainly will try to push even harder to get promoted or even fight for the championship. than in Division 1 last year, but at the moment bookies are not expecting him to manage to fight for promotion back straight away.
Aston Martin finished in a decent 5th place last year - actually for 2nd year in a row. While some other teams are hard to call because of newcomers, this team is hard to call as drivers have had their ups and downs and it really will depend how well they have prepared for the races this season.

TEAM - Williams

Short preview introduction:
Malrom got relegated from Division1 before last season, but did do better in this season finishing 12th. Even though at the same time it depends how you look at it - while he got better finishing place, this is Division so he probably expected fight for a promotion rather than 12th place. He had 3 podiums and one win and it really seems that this year he will improve on that if he finds the correct rhythm , but lets see. He is joined by a returning driver - mogwai, who is another newcomer here with some serious stats - at the same time he has been out of F1 for a bit so lets see how comfortable he feels in the car.
As a team Williams finished in last place - it was not really Malrom's fault though as the other driver who is not racing this year - trampie - ended up last in driver's championship with quite low amount of points. This time though I would not expect them being last, but at the same time bookmakers are not expecting top spot fight.

PREVIEW OF THE SEASON

While in Division 1 preview I mentioned it is really interesting fight for the number 1 spot due to many top performers, here actually it is other way round - there are not too many standout performers this season - many of the drivers have been stuck in Division 2 for some time, we have many newcomers and many drivers who debuted last season, so yeah all that together actually brings even more interesting fight. Even last year we saw that many drivers manage to get some podiums, but at the same time it was not enough for them to get good places.

Still, if I would have to predict who will be in the fight I would mention that we have some newcomers who on the paper seem to be really good, so maybe like last year's winner Jester will get promoted with flying colors. We also still have drivers who heavily underperformed last year like RomynPG. We also have drivers who have been close to promotion spots previously like Oxford NZ or drivers who got relegated from Division 1 in past or come here just now from previous season like yorkshiredragon. So yeah, I expect a really interesting season and would even say we do not have favorites for championship win or promotion at the moment. Lets hope it will be a close and interesting fight all through the season!

Here is the roster for this season - in Bold the relegated drivers to this league or newcomers - usually I would offer to choose teams but due to time limit I have just randomly appointed them. The Real Slim Shady has not yet confirmed playing, so depending if he applies within first GW we will see if it is him or an average of other drivers (this was explained in last year's thread)

Additionally since we are 18 not 20 I had to cut one team from last year - since only team with no drivers at all was Red Bull, but it is one of the most populars teams, I of course did not cut it, but instead am cutting Kick Sauber - it became Audi, so we can count it as a new team and therefore cut it (jeffersdn therefore changes team).
Also - no Cadillac here this time, but they anyway are at the bottom mostly in actual F1 so you can just imagine an extra team that is nonstop losing here too .

Congratulations jimmy ching from Ferrari with pole position for the Australian GP! Nice way to start the season and lets see if can turn it also to win in the first race!

In P2 we see jeffersdn from Red Bull Racing, who puts himself right on the front row and in an excellent position to challenge for the win - lets see with the team change maybe his luck has also changed?

P3-4 is shared by S_sutton87 from Alpine and Oxford NZ from Racing Bulls - both had a nice result in quali, but have had ups and downs in previous seasons, so it is hard to say yet how they will do in the race.

Just behind them, our newcomer Redsnout from Red Bull Racing and Mystery from Haas share P5-6, giving Red Bull Racing two drivers inside the top 6. bluelionman from Aston Martin takes P7, followed by the returning driver mogwai from Williams in P8. The top 10 is completed by chris2k_11 from Mercedes in P9 and Ralfbergs from McLaren in P10.

Looking at the teams, Red Bull Racing has made the strongest impression at the top 10, while Ferrari also has both drivers relatively close to the first half, with Stena Bib starting P12, while Haas has Mystery in P5-6 and RomynPG just outside the top 10 in P11.

On the other side, yorkshiredragon from Alpine, who got relegated last year from Division 1, starts this season not the way he would have wanted - in P18, which this season is the last spot. Malrom, who struggled last year, only P17 here too.

From teams none are with no drivers inside top 10, which this year is a bit easier as we have 18 drivers total, so getting points regularly will definitely be more crucial.

All in all, a very interesting grid with some big differences between some of the teammate starting positions. Hard to call anything yet though as it is only one GW so far and can be just luck - lets see!

As you can see i have switched from uploading tables as pictures to an embedded table - it does lose some coloring, but I hope with the symbols (symbols are random and colors mostly too) and colors for teams it will still be distinct enough.

Why such switch? - usually I hate the part of preparing table, uploading etc - this way it becomes just formulaic - copy results from Excel and paste here. Also last year towards end some said that picture is not showing - so this should be showing to everyone. It helps to make it faster plus also makes a bit more automatic the rest of the process as I can use AI to prepare the template for writeup (don't worry , I will not just repost whatever AI writes , especially as I am using free version - this is more to have the structure ready and only do the editing for text parts which are not automatic - the writeup that is not just based on positions will still be mine, obviously in first qualifying it is shorter since its just 1 GW)

Congratulations to our winner woody71 representing Aston Martin with win in Australia! Great performance to get number 1 spot after starting from just P14 - what a turnaround!

2nd place goes to Mystery from Haas, who also improved - from P5-6 to get a podium spot and start the season with quite nice points.

In 3rd place we see Stena Bib from Ferrari - our debutant starts straight with a podium and nicely improves from P12 too.

Other interesting facts from the race -

No streaks yet since it is the first race, so lets see who else improved significantly - topspur from McLaren managed a finish in 6th after a start in P13, while The Real Slim Shady improved from P15 to 10th to get a point.

From teams Ferrari with a great start with two drivers in top 6, while Aston Martin and Haas also managed to see both their drivers in the points.

Meanwhile on the opposite side last place went to Blue Fire from Racing Bulls, who did not have the best starting spot either in P16, while Malrom from Williams finished 17th - in same spot he started in. From teams Alpine and Racing Bulls ended the race with no points at all - meaning that also yorkshiredragon, who got relegated last year, ended the first race with no points (no surprise though, since he started from P18).

I guess it is not exactly correct to call them FPL points - it is GW2 FPL points and points that drivers get from qualification, which are not really FPL points (but based on FPL position). Other than that - yes, very close finish
