When defenders miss in penalty shoot-outs, the blame should fall squarely upon the attacking players who didn’t step up to take one.

Exactly! Akanji missed now 3 pens in a row, if I'm not mistaken

Yeah, not quite a Stuart Pearce redemption for him… (Psycho was a regular club penalty-taker, even though a left-back.)

Full backs have often made good penalty takers (Phil Neal was a reliable regular taker for Liverpool back in the day and one of Alan Kennedy's 2 winning European Cup goals was in a penalty shoot out.).

As was said yesterday, it doesn't say much for your forwards if centre backs are needed to take penalties.....

Red cards for Mbappé and Dembele then, before Le Pen gives Trump a call to overturn them? ;)

How are officials from remaining nations allowed to officiate potential opponents?

Surely enough officials from Germany, Netherlands, Scotland and the rest of the 40 eliminated nations!

Who is reffing Argentina v Switzerland? USA by any chance?

Tbf, England referee for Spain v Belgium.

I guess French and Spanish refs for England vs Norway, Argentina v Switzerland?

Actually can't have Europe ref for Europe v South America so perhaps USA will ref Messi after all...

Not sure that's a tbf, but a fkn hell it's this one too.

I think Colombia Swiss had Central/South American officials.

That's a very similar example to when Atwell was on Var for a Forest match and supports Luton when they are both involved in a relegation scrap. There's enough officials so this type of stuff doesnt happen and yet when it's called out no other teams stand with the club that's calling it out.

They did used to send home refs of nations still involved at last eight stage, I’m sure.

No previous suggestion a European ref can’t officiate a final involving a different European nation though, even if a close rival would be questionable. Howard Webb did an all-European final, but Collina did Brazil-Germany, Rizzoli Germany-Argentina and Marciniak Argentina-France.

First rest day after nearly 4 weeks. Always brings with it the paradox of it feeling like it’s nearly over, while at the same time the serious stuff is just getting started.

All gets a bit simpler from now on. Only one more stupid o’clock match, and while the QFs have four different kick-off times, the semis and final are all at 8pm BST! 8-)

Incidentally, Canada and Mexico are now done in terms of host duties. Thanks to both for bringing some much-needed sanity to proceedings.

Didn’t help that the referee took an absolute age to allow him to take it but yes, another stutter f*ck up.

The VAR check was laughable. There was not a hint of a foul on Hakimi, one look at a replay would have cleared that up. But for some reason the whole thing ends up taking about three minutes.

Penalty taking has been really poor in this World Cup, from the stars to the hapless defenders in the shoot-outs.

This one feels like it’s going the distance. Will Bono give Morocco the Edge? ;)

If they can just get One, there’s hope…

It’s taken going two down for them to start showing any ambition, anyway.
