I only want it to do really basic stuff like a spreadsheet and simple internet browsing - all media stuff is on other boxes....
So I'm assuming that the cheapest jobbie will be up to it; but wtvf is the score with power?

Simple answer is usually the best you can afford, making the distinction that price doesn't necessarily give you the best components.
If you don't need a super fast cpu (i.e. not gaming), massive memory (saving loads of stuff - music/ photos) then any budget model should so for you needs. Anything running Win11 should do you. Refurbs will be cheaper.

Ah yes the Windows version - it's been ages since I bought a laptop
What about power?
I'm reading that they don't come with bricks. Are they still needed or or is a mobile charger ok?

Re: Dead Laptop :((
Rarely take my laptop out of the house, plugged in to the mains set at charge to 80% constantly. Charge only good for a few hours before needing the mains when taken out. But then I am running games on it rather than just browser.
A chromebook might be a better bet for longer battery life, but not not the performance of a laptop. Runs android and can do spreadsheet etc.
