The previous supplier Genius Sports Limited are a stock market listed company and it looks like the short turnaround from their decision to no longer supply it wasn't enough to provide the game beyond what they achieved on that test site and the technicality of having it fully functioning for the masses throughout the tournament was just beyond the time constraints. I'm sure the extra time before the new season enables them to perfect that.

As Aurora said, just go back to paying to play so it’s profitable for them to have a game in the first place.

I'm tempted to do the fanteam game but i haven't gambled in years and feels like a slippery slope for me.

£1, £10 and big roller games.

Is this the first time they haven't done one in last 20 year or so?
So poor, and possibly the worst build up to a World cup i can remember

If they do go back to paid entries - £2 per team as I remember, then I really hope they trial and test their payment system rigorously before the season starts, as I recall back in the day, at times it caused chaos, with payments being taken but credits not given etc, and the going back and forth trying to sort it out was a nightmare, plenty of time though, I wouldn't even have limits it's not worth the while as people can just use family and friends. I don't know if this would be universally popular but it might increase prize levels again.

Paid entries no chance - GDPR rules were introduced 2018, and the sun's attempt at becoming a betting company was a disaster, connected with Oz (murdoch) company tabcorp, they had 1 out of 5 star ratings and shut down (ran from 2016 to 2018, maybe no coincidence) having lost over £50m i think, but google is your friend (sometimes). Paid entries would now be linked to having that sort of licence so it won't be happening.
Much discussion on similar matters back in FISO files in those years - I even recall mentioning back in 2012 that games could soon be going behind paywalls, I could see the telegraph doing that next term - hope not of course.

Re: Will there be a World Cup fantasy this year?
my take on this would be that genius left the sun in the lurch.
the sun then scrambled around trying to get a game ready but just failed.
i think fantasy is important to them and would expect it back next year for the epl.
fantasy has pretty much had it with the torygraph having mucked their game up and then left with falling numbers must be odds against next season, so its playing for an fpl cuddly toy or fanteam with all the american fantasy sites having kicked out UK players.
i think fanteam will still be there next season but with new owners there must be a level of uncertainty and sdt should be back, a very long way from it's heyday and a real shame UK legislation seems to have put USA operators off, but do you really want your money in the land of the fee given current political turmoil there!
