Re: The Rounded Keeper - FPL Pub Talk & Matchday Banter 25/26
We’re officially into what I remember an article some years back called “World Cup Limbo” now. First summer one for eight years, of course!
Doesn’t feel like there’s as big a gap as there used to be, only 12 days between Champions League final and the big kick-off in Trumpland (well, Mexico actually… in fact, there’s three opening ceremonies
) Time for a few meaningless warm-up games to injure key players, and to decide whether to bother entering a transfer-shovelling fantasy game to help maintain interest in Uzbekistan v DR Congo.

Good piece about TNT’s appallingly poor coverage here.
https://www.football365.com/news/champi ... t-fletcher
Why anyone pays to watch TNT Sport is beyond me. Sky aren’t great but heavens above, the TNT presenters/commentators/pundit team are embarrassingly poor.

I think the main reason is “there’s no other option” (unless you want to break the law and/or get lots of nasty stuff on your devices). I’ll be happy to be rid of it once their European rights go at the end of next season.

On reading further details, maybe not quite as bad an outlook as the headlines initially suggested.forestfan wrote: 01 Jun 2026, 11:58 Sounds like Keegan doesn’t have long left, according to quotes from him at a recent Newcastle event![]()
Dalglish also receiving cancer treatment. It’s just been one thing after another for Liverpool, ever since they won last year’s title.

John Barnes as well
Read the email properly now and he talks about his cancer battle and how his psa is fine now so some good news....he's beaten it and just talks about something that he's kept secret.

Read this earlier today. I was eleven in 1982 too so it really resonated.
I expect it will apply exactly the same to those with first World Cups before and after it though. Well worth a few minutes of your time, especially if you’re a similar vintage to me.

Maybe that should be cosseted in which continent it was and when as not much of 78 was on at watchable times, if at all. (That I can remember.)
Yeah, I remember Scotland

the Dutch, Kempes and Argentinian hair and that Cryiff refused to go.
But then I remember Scotland again

"Zaire", the Dutch, Poles, Muller, and some good and funny Pundits (Clough, Allison etc al). Haiti were there too, and yes I am expecting a win for them vs Scotland.
But then I remember Moore in the Jewellers, Bonetti and Brazil.
But 82 was in the post 'O' Level ideal of sun and football and all matches being watchable. And that Italy side laying the ghost of the Media Darling Brazil to rest, although Socrates was so classy...
Its often rated the worst, but I think Germany and Austria screwed it.
The Germans were shite and that's without the GBH by the GK.
Platini and France were wonderful.
Maradonna was young and got the best red card "ever".

Aside from actually winning the World Cup itself, which still means more than literally anything involving a round ball.

It is going to take 72 games just to weed out the weakest 16 teams and take us to where we should have started from, i.e. 32 teams.forestfan wrote:Aside from actually winning the World Cup itself, which still means more than literally anything involving a round ball.
Then 31 interesting games in the knockout so about 70% complete rubbish.
A bit different if you are a fan of a lesser team but for someone like England the group games SHOULD just be warm up games. Might even get through with 2 losses!

I'm all aboard the Haiti express to beat Scotland and anyone against AmeriKKKa, but I expect VAR to get them out of the Group
England will need a big dollop of Southgate to avoid Mexico in Mexico. I assume a win would mean at least another train from Kansas City

Croatia and Ghana are both banana-skins, especially given how we normally start tournaments (and have done for the past 40 years…) If we can’t beat the Canals we’re definitely sunk, thoughmurf wrote: 06 Jun 2026, 14:32It is going to take 72 games just to weed out the weakest 16 teams and take us to where we should have started from, i.e. 32 teams.forestfan wrote:Aside from actually winning the World Cup itself, which still means more than literally anything involving a round ball.

Maradona, Lineker and Mexican waves for me (a mere youngster here
) The dazzling Danes, ugly Uruguay, some stunning goals (Josimar, Negrete, Rats against Bats…) and the Germans almost outlasting everyone as they have a tendency to do.
It’s been more or less the same story for England every tournament since, bar those we didn’t qualify for or never got off the ground. Start badly, come through the must-win game, build momentum, raise hopes, then lose in a creditable performance thanks to a bad decision/freak goal/missed penalty and say “We’ll do it next time…”

Boycotted the last one, only saw the France semi as I was at a friends, and will be boycotting this one as well. I will break if England make the final, because, but sod the rest of it.
There was one 20+ years ago, whenever it was was good timing for UK, where I watched 54.5 out of the 56 games - had to miss one completely and was stuck on the Tube for half of another. 56 games was quite enough but 70+ just to get down to 32 - lol get a grip
FIFA completely jumped the shark now - Qatar/Saudi was bad enough but their dumbass Peace Prize the final nail. Europe and South America should just get together and begin the process of starting over.
I'll be in the RK snug for the duration as there's no TV in there

Yeah, probably the poorest for quality of football too, with that awful balloon-like ball that meant every free kick went into row Z. Capello boot-camp England were awful too, and it got the final it deserved with the Dutch of all teams resorting to kicking the crap out of the opposition!itslikebrandnew wrote: 06 Jun 2026, 16:01 While we are talking of memories what about that dreaded vuvuzela world cup. I'd forgotten about that ball. That's right it was like impossible to get a free kick on target but it didnt stop Ronaldo skying it over and over again.

Qatar on the other hand was something of a “guilty pleasure” one for me. Leaving aside the politics, and rearrangement of the club season, I actually quite enjoyed the “advent calendar World Cup”, and it had that rare thing of a final to remember, too.
Strange to realise this is the first World Cup summer for eight years though
And that one was in Russia, who can’t even show their flag at global sports events now.
