Any suggestions for my fight to win my friends FPL league?

Post by Ralfbergs »

Usually I do not post regarding FPL here much anymore (besides the sidegames), especially as I do quite average or worse on FPL, but this year (or to be precise - in second half of the season), I actually have managed to be in the lead in the league with my friends, but currently can't decide what would be the best strategy for the last 3 gameweeks, so I thought why not ask Fiso like I did in the old times. (this thread in short is about what to do for GW36 transfers and how to plan out the rest)

So the situation - we play league split in 2 parts, so for second part of season we count points beginning from GW 20, so there the situation is as follows:

1st place currently - my team (Nasty Quokkas) https://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/2424159/history - with one chip left to play (Free hit) - 940 points;
2nd place - this team https://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/5662250/history - with one chip left to play (triple captain) - 928 points (12 points difference)
3rd place - this team https://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/224725/history - no chips left to play - 913 points (27 points difference)
4th place - this team https://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/1734257/history - with one chip left to play (triple captain) - 901 points (39 points difference)

There are some other players in the league, but if they manage to do a miracle, then whatever kudos to them, but these 3 are my main rivals, with current 2nd place probably being the main one.

First of all, there is a big chance that the next GW both triple captains will be used for Haaland, which I also have, but don't have triple C, so I will just captain him, to lessen the damage.

Now the question is - when to best use the Free hit I have - next gameweek for me seems like it might end up being a waste, but at the same time, what changes then I should make to both gain from double gameweek and at the same time plan out free hit for lets say GW 37 (worried about GW38 having too much rotation possibly ?). Also I have a big problem with my goalkeepers, but seem to not be able to get rid of one of them for an upgraded one.

So here is how my team currently looks for next GW (having Bowen vs Arsenal two defenders also seems not the best idea):

And this is my transfer view situation:

Any suggestions welcome!

P.S. I do not mean this as a thread where I expect exact suggestions and then to follow them and to win the league - I plan to still make my decisions about what to do in the end, but since often I end up planning out the way which leads me to only losing points, would like to hear what more experienced players or players with better results than me have to say.

On a general.level, pick players from Clubs with a lot to play for (ie definitely not Sanchez) that you think are going to survive or get into Europe or win the title.

Pick players from those Clubs likely to play ie Solanke maybe back very soon and replace Richardson - if you think Spurs are going to score their way to survival.

That should get rid of half your Squad 🤷‍♂️

I’m a big fan of FH38 provided you are around for team news.

- lots of rotation/resting can affect prem teams
- all games ko same time so team news may be available for all teams
- many teams in specific situations that can be good or bad for their players.
- if playing defensively you know which FPL opponents you need to cover (some of the above may be out of contention by 38).

I’ve only managed to do it twice though, once I halved my OR in GW38 alone, the other was more neutral.

This week I’d roll, in Eze to Saka looks necessary for GW37.

Oh yes go NOW and you should have enough players with stuff to play for in 38.

Note: Wilson (Ful) is out of contract and if they have nowt to play for then ......

Yeah actually didn't think of it that more team news might be known since last GW all games start same time - plus I will also see what the opponents teams look like (more or less), so if I am ahead, I could take some of the picks they have to cancel out losing points on some players. But I do have a feeling that after Haaland triple C and given how my team looks like for GW36 I might be in the chase in last GW though.,

GW 38 could be a dud with pretty much everything decided.

Loads of rotation surprise results and randoms hauling...

It has to be the least predictable GW of the season, you're much better getting a few GWs of some certainty 🤷‍♂️

Also regarding this - my plan was to get somebody from Man City then instead of rolling, since they do have double gameweek. I think that might be more useful - maybe in place of Van Dijk to get Man City defender, but yeah then I won't be able to get Saka

if you want two city defenders you could have O Riley

I would use chips now waiting for 38 seems like a disaster waiting to happen. Playing a non ideal bench boost 36 myself to not get rotated out of it in 38

Sorry yes hadn’t noticed only 2 Man City. Assumed everyone had 3 by now.

I agree with hancockjr. Comments about saving Chips being risky in GW38 are broadly correct. However the opposite can be true for the Free Hit. It gives you more control not less. Added to that you will know how much risk you need to engage with. If it is close you can tactically cover off the key threats and focus your potential upside on a smaller handful of high ceiling players. If you are chasing by a lot, you can take more risk.

38 is a fools dream

The only ground being made up then is the ground on which Tottenham’s cheese room was to be built. Until they erect it, the curse will live

Ok so after a bit of deliberation here is what I decided to go for and why:

I decided to use free hit this gameweek - even though I do like the idea of leaving it to last one, it is true that there might be rotations and I might need then to focus on teams fighting still for relegation or if title race is still on/race for European spots, then maybe something there, but there are many questions and hard to predict it now.
Additionally - if I look at the team I have now then besides the goalkeeper problem, the rest of the team seems ok for GW37 - basically:
Haaland (bou); Bowen (new); Thiago (CRY); Fernandes (NFO); Wilson (wol), Eze (BUR), Guehi (bou), Salib and Gabriel (BUR), Van Dijk (bou) (with Garner as the reserve) - so could fix goalkeeper problem too assuming not too many injuries (of course Eze is a question there still and rotations). Plus if really needed (if Sanchez is back) I could roll a transfer.
Additionally on paper GW38 fixtures look decent too, but of course there is the rotation question etc, but compared to my main rival - I think it should be ok.

I hope to gain enough advantage this gameweek (and hopefully they do not get too much advantage triple captaining Haaland (most likely)) by using a better attack and some other players rather what I had, so in worst case scenario can also use a hit or two later if needed. Will really depends on the team I gathered though as I often am not the best with free hits anyway.

Thanks for comments and opinions

How’s it been going ?

Have you been getting more points, choosing the right captain that sort of thing?

It ended up being the wrong decision to go for free hit this gameweek as what I picked ended up getting less (not by much but still) than what I would had if I would keep everything the same. Mainly due to Guehi being better DEF pick and my picks that I chose many of them not doing that much. Does not mean that I would do much better in GW 38 though. At the moment I am about 14 points off from the leader

Yea same for my bench boost I ended up losing ground slightly but glad I went for it.

38 especially is a minefield I wouldn’t save chips for then but then look how pep rotated me out of a nice score
