Albums of the year 2024

Post by unc.si »

Nearly December so here's my top 10 albums of the year so far:

Top 5 (no particular order):

Fontaines DC, Romance
Hurray for the Riff Raff, The past is still alive
Waxahatchee, Tigers Blood,
Kim Gordon, The Collective
Cassandra Jenkins, My light, My destroyer

6-10 (no particular order)
The Cure - Songs of a Lost World
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Wild God
The the, Ensoulement
Weyes Blood, and in the darkness, hearts aglow
Cindy Lee, Diamond Jubilee

not quite room for Amyl and the Sniffers, Kelly Lee Owens, Adrienne Lenker, St Vincent, Beth Gibbons, Brittany Howard, JAMC and Father John Misty

Not a great year for new(ish) bands, Fontaines excepted (the 3 other bands on the list have been going for 30 odd years at least, and of those 3 I'm not sure whether The the really count as a band anyway), but some great stuff released this year

I'll be posting mine at Christmas as ever - Weyes Blood, Nick Cave and Fontaines Dc might be there of those from your lists, but The Smile, Lemon Twigs, and Laura Marling currently vying for top places.

1. The The - by a country mile, brilliant album
2. Public Service Broadcasting - slight return to form
3. err, not sure I've 'bought' 3 new albums this year... or been enticed to by hearing singles (Pixies, Nick Cave etc)

Only listened to the new Laura Marling album once and it didn't really grab me but I'll give it another go. Suspect it will need a few listens to get into

Lemon Twigs a bit too jingly jangly 60's pop for me. I do like them but not listened to the latest album yet

I nearly always buy my albums the year after. However one that I did get was Terrapath by Plantoid which has been a revelation. :)

Gave that a listen earlier. Interesting - kind of Jazz Rock. will give it another go later or tomorrow.

I do tend to buy quite a lot of records still (I've got physical copies of all the albums in my top 10, apart from Cindy Lee which hasn't been released physically although I have ordered the triple vinyl for when its released in February). Probably bought 25 to 30 new albums this year, plus a few old ones at record fairs and second hand record shops.

I think it has a rather trippy/indie feel to it as well. My daughter however thinks it is just more prog.

Long time since posting on the forum, but I've come here looking for something new to listen to.
I have heard Fontaines and Nick Cave which are pretty good.
I will check out some of unc's suggestions, cheers all.

Bands barely exist any more (relatively). I know you're not talking about "top of the charts" music but for illustration (courtesy of Richard Osman):

- In the first half of the 1980s, there were 146 weeks when bands were number one.
- The first half of the '90s, there were 141 weeks.
- In the first five years of this decade, three weeks.

We have had three number one weeks, one of which was The Beatles, when they had the lovely comeback single, and one of which was Little Mix. And that's the only official band. You've had a single week at number one in this entire decade.

Financially it just doesn't pay off any more (old bands are ok as they have their fan base, but new ones aren't coming through).

Its also very easy now to record your own music. You don't need a studio anymore to put tracks out so its really easy for singer songwriters to get their music out there and you don't have to make enough money to pay 4 or 5 band members.

some good bands around - obviously Fontaines DC and Idles, but also great bands like Porridge radio, Wunderhorse, Yard Act, Amyl etc, but yeah, hardly any big selling chart acts are bands. Hadn't realised just how few though until you posted those Osman stats.

still some great singer songwriter music out there. I think its in live music where the lack of bands is felt most keenly. Nothing like seeing a great band in a sweaty club :-)

Yeah I'm good thanks although the year has been a bit of a rollercoaster, likewise hope you are well.
Good to see a lot of familiar names around here still.

In recent times I've stumbled across a few new bands which I quite like
DEADLETTER
Wet Leg
The Rah's

... and not a new band but one I discovered a few years ago
Sleaford Mods

Yeah - bring it back! A mainstay of late-‘00s FISO (even though it wasn’t actually ‘hosted’ here), along with the still indomitable FISODAS (and FISO Goals with manual prediction posting on the thread!)

I wondered if Lucky7s had become simply Lucky at one stage, to remove association with the long-defunct game, but that ID is someone else…
