What does CK mean?

Post by billierios »

Hi. Newbie here. Experienced TFF player (won my superleagues last few years, incl 2 last year).

I have just found your forum - very informatiive and will take a few hours to 'get on board' but I feel it may be useful.

I have seen the phrase CK banded about and I was curious what this means. I assume it is a 2 letter acronym of some sort....

Yeah, “Carlos Kickaball” is a phrase coined by Alan Sugar I think when he owned Spurs back in the day.

It’s generally used here to refer to a player who is unproven in English football and therefore a high-risk fantasy pick (though can be a worthwhile gamble at the right price).

For example, back in the day, people would have rushed to pick Shevchenko at around the same price as Henry, and we all know how that turned out.

I remember a Chelsea ff player who asked my about a CK called Giroud. I knew his English style was shining in the French League at the time. I gave him thumbs up for this one.

Some people think the term means a player is automatically bad, when it’s more a case of “approach with caution”.

Whether a world-class name or an unknown, there’s no knowing how a player will adapt to the English game for the first time and you can get either extreme.

Back to ff, who are the CKs that have been/may still be worth gambling on this year? CKs are pretty well absent from the top 30 or so scorers so far. Those bigged up quite a lot before they played included Savio, Zirkzee, Minteh... Savio may get quite a lot of points in the end, but I can't see any really obvious good bets. Am I missing something? Is the old 'avoid CKs' rule still cardinal?

Barco at Brighton must be the worst CK tip ever. Him or that striker at Wigan several years back.

(PS IMO really big stars aren't actually CKs (by the old Alan Sugar thinking) but should be treated with the same caution anyway)

Had to be Barcoing mad to fall for that.

Wasn't Boselli an infamous one?

There are so many, that some of them will be good others not and some not play at all.

In the olde days there would only be a handful and a big fanfare, nowadays it's all a bit meh, as the kids might still be saying eg the German WHam CF who was impressive in the Euros.

Impressive as a Plan B supersub anyway, the German Weghorst ;)

There are so many more signings from abroad these days and probably more turnover of squads even compared to 10 or 20 years ago, and a lot of the best players come to the PL early in their careers anyway, so are little different from home-grown young players. Back then it was more of an event signing situation, ranging from “world class and can’t fail” but often did (Veron, Shevchenko) to “who’s he, sounds interesting” (the season’s must-have enabler, or loaned out by September).
