Apologies. Just associate Roll With It with their downturn for some reason. It is a bit shit 'flatpack Oasis' but they were generally still good then.

Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger were released after Roll With It (never got why Morning Glory or Champagne Supernova were not singles ahead of Some Might Say and Roll With It to be honest?). So I'd say Oasis were at their peak then personally.
Blur on the other hand peaked at Parklife IMO, which was before Country House, so arguably at the beginning of their decline IMO.

Re: Game of Thrones - Inc Spoilers to last aired UK TV episode.
Bringing it back to the original topic, the last couple of series of GoT were its equivalent of Be Here Now - the result of outgrowing itself and believing too much of their own hype (while at the same time not being anywhere near as bad as some people suggest, skewed by comparison with what came before).

So after the Be Here Now and Standing In The Shoulders Of Giants of the last few series of GoT, the new series is the rubbish Oasis where all the old members were killed off and the new songs were dull and boring.
Some people still raved about them, some kept watching out of hope/compulsion but 90% kept away knowing they were awful.

Or maybe the Noel/Liam solo material that is generally better than latter years Oasis, at least…murf wrote: ↑14 Aug 2022, 13:06 So after the Be Here Now and Standing In The Shoulders Of Giants of the last few series of GoT, the new series is the rubbish Oasis where all the old members were killed off and the new songs were dull and boring.

Ygritte was quite good in that submarine thing with her off Corrie.

Yeah, and she was joined by a couple of others (Stannis and Podrick I think), they were calling it Westeros-on-Sea… Nearly everything I watch these days seems to have a former GoT actor in it, which is understandable given there were about 300 named characters! (Rebecca from Ted Lasso being the ‘shame, shame’ nun is one of the more random ones…)

Re: Game of Thrones - Inc Spoilers to last aired UK TV episode.
I mean, it’s pretty decent if you like Oasis, even if hardly groundbreaking (is anything, these days?)
Reinventing yourself and staying relevant is near-impossible. Every long-standing act performs the new stuff that nobody cares much about before breaking out the old hits for the crowd. Even McCartney only found a couple of post-1975 tracks worthy of inclusion at Glasto I think (though I was disappointed at the absence of Mull of Kintyre and the Frog Chorus…)
Same with TV and movie franchises. It’s basically a mixture of half-decent and terrible recyclings of old storylines with different characters. Rather like a big budget version of the much-maligned soaps, really…

Re: Game of Thrones - Inc Spoilers to last aired UK TV episode.
Positive noises coming out of the premiere, anyway. New showrunners (though not unconnected from GoT), finished source material and GRRM involvement (and, many would say, none from Benioff and Weiss) bodes well.

Re: Game of Thrones - Inc Spoilers to last aired UK TV episode.
Just watched the first episode of House of the Dragon and (no spoilers) I think it was a great start. Plenty of lore for fans of the series but you could have watched the first episode and been hooked had you never even heard the name Daenerys before.
It's bloody, full of Kings Landing filth and to be honest, quite fast paced compared to the first episode or two of GoT and it's great to hear some slight variations on Ramin Djawadi's familiar themes, especially fire and blood and of course the main GoT theme.
Great start, really looking forward to this being what GoT could and should have been.

Just watching it now and I'm also impressed GoT had so many references to the past that this has the potential IMHO to be very good.Mav3rick wrote: ↑22 Aug 2022, 18:57 Just watched the first episode of House of the Dragon and (no spoilers) I think it was a great start. Re: Game of Thrones - Inc Spoilers to last aired UK TV episode.
Yes, great start, feels like discovering Westeros all over again, shame I can’t binge it this time but it’s the sort of show that lends itself to being taken at a steadier pace really.
Some well placed nods to existing fans (the music, a Baratheon, a Stark!), some customary violence, a couple of huge dragons (of course) and some new characters with lots of potential. Seems it’s largely going to be focused in one place as opposed to the sprawling epic of the original, which was both a blessing and a curse in terms of how to pull it all back together satisfactorily, which even the original author hasn’t yet solved, never mind the TV showrunners! And I always found the political goings on in King’s Landing were among the best bits of GoT anyway, though hope we do revisit some of the other old favourite locations in the Seven Kingdoms and beyond.

Westeros seems to be taking a clear early advantage over Middle-earth on the IMDB ratings battlefield…

I didn't mind the rings of power episodes (1 & 2 seen so far). I imagine that any hate is being directed toward the female cast, much like the young Alicent actress apparently received.
It is getting confusing watching the two in parallel though...

Re: Game of Thrones - Inc Spoilers to last aired UK TV episode.
Anyway, good to see the Lannisters return last night… discovered today that the twins are both played by the same actor, who also played Ser Hugh of the Vale in the first series of GoT! I thought this might be the exception to the “every show I watch has a GoT actor in it”, but seemingly not…
Incidentally I saw it mentioned that there’s one significant GoT character (excluding white walkers and three-eyed ravens etc. who are unlikely to figure in this spin-off) who would be alive in the timeline of this…

Bit underwhelmed so far. Quite liked the first 2 as we slowly introduced and built up some characters but the 3rd was a bit shite imo.

Re: Game of Thrones - Inc Spoilers to last aired UK TV episode.
I thought it was probably the best so far, we got the hunt scene we never got in GoT S1 as well as some dragon action to finish with, and plenty more character development in between. Shame we didn’t get to see more of the Crabfeeder though, had potential to be an interesting villain.
I saw one comment likening Daemon’s rampage through the enemy ranks to Haaland making mincemeat of PL defences. Maybe Erling has some Targaryen blood

I think he's more likely to be Asgardian than Targaryen.
On HOTD, can anyone tell me what the intro animations are supposed to depict? Much more abstract that GoT's map of Westeros but I assume its a conquerors map of some sort

No idea, other than blood flowing through the Seven Kingdoms due to Targaryen actions…
On the subject of Norwegians… the time jumps of HOTD make it feel more like Vikings in a way. The challenges of ageing and/or recasting are familiar from that show, Bjorn ended up looking older than his mother!

Apparently there’s a spoiler for this in Series 3 of GoT, so will try to avoid reading/remembering that! Probably something in Maester Aemon’s reminiscences at the Wall. Incidentally, he was about 100 years old, so this show could conceivably make it into his era…

The recasting of the princess and queen is very controversial real shame that. But get it with the time jump although it’s only 10 years isn’t it? So next episode their last could be a big one.

Re: Game of Thrones - Inc Spoilers to last aired UK TV episode.
Yeah, expect so… seems early for a Red Wedding/Ned losing his head type moment (four episodes too early, to be precise!) but it sounds like it’s going to be essentially a series of two halves.happyhoppy wrote: ↑15 Sep 2022, 07:52 The recasting of the princess and queen is very controversial real shame that. As for the recasting, I guess 10 years would be manageable but they’ll probably have to portray those characters as “old” in future series if they last that long, which they couldn’t easily do with actors who are barely beyond their teens.
