Re: Manchester United Seasonal Blog 2022/23 - the Erik ten Hag era
Tbh, it's one of the great unwritten sports' books: the fall and rise of Lpool.
While there was perpetual hope, until each manager flopped; they went through many off seasons of not being able to attract the best players. If you remember Walcott wanted a ridiculous amount of cash to sign; and the likes of Jermaine Pennant were lauded until he had "played" a few matches etc.
I can't remember the CL miracle squad, so I'll just look at the Prem near-miss with Suarez, rescuing his career fresh from his 1st biting ban (he did get one from a World Cup match vs Italy?); Sterling from the Yoofs and I assume that Sturridge had failed at Chelsea and Citeh before his Anfield purple patch. Buck set up quite a solid defence with Gerrard running around shouting at people and erm, erm.....
The first thing MU need is a sensible, modern way of playing with players (even kids) capable of playing that way ie a solid base/foundation to build on/from. While we may have thought Rungneck was the Messiah, the Club decided otherwise and we now have another manager spunking a load of cash on his mates. Obviously 10H may get things rolling in the right direction etc, but if Barca were anywhere near seriously asking about Maguire they should have taken it up asap.
My final piece of doom and gloom: imagine you were a coveted young player (ignoring style of play and fanhood, but considering the manager) list the Prem Clubs in order of who you would want to play for. How low are MU on the list?

From what I've seen of ETH he would've made a good post-Guardiola City manager.

I guess that was one of the factors he would have considered before deciding on the United move. Sure they will give agents a bit of a nudge to indicate who’s on their radar… obviously they will be keeping an eye on how Vieira and Arteta develop as PL managers, and maybe others with a Barca background but it’s a case of who’s in the right place at the right time really. I don’t suppose a manager can bank on say a 10% chance of being the chosen one.

I think the point is it's not about the manager but the DoF / scouting structure behind the scenes. Doesn't matter whether it's EtH, Poch or Pep if the recruitment strategy is ad hoc rather than longer term continuity planning.

Re: Manchester United Seasonal Blog 2022/23 - the Erik ten Hag era
It's all relative - Liverpool was outspending United for most of their wilderness years and City was blowing the competition away to the tune of 600% greater spending once they were money doped. United is outspending Liverpool now in trying to rebuild but not blowing the competition away as City or Chelsea were before them.forestfan wrote: ↑05 Jul 2022, 11:56I guess so, though the spending far outweighs Liverpool’s in those days, even after adjusting for inflation.blahblah wrote: ↑05 Jul 2022, 11:53But they sprayed cash about for a while, until they brought in Pep's behind the scenes from Barca in?forestfan wrote: ↑05 Jul 2022, 11:44 City did it the right way, they got the behind the scenes structure in place first and then recruited Pep. While he will be very tough to replace when he eventually does move on, I’m sure they already have a shortlist of successors and it won’t cause any real upheaval in their recruitment strategy.
United on the other hand have just ended up with this shambolic, short-term approach where the layer between CEO and team manager is hard to really understand.
In theory that comparison only works with Newcastle now, with MU far more like Lpool in their wilderness years?

Yes. We all thought Ralf Rangnick was going to do that, too help with long term. But nah Mangers of man united have too much say in transfers. It funny how Ralf Rangnick targets for Manchester united have now been forgotten about.thebillfella wrote: ↑05 Jul 2022, 13:58I think the point is it's not about the manager but the DoF / scouting structure behind the scenes. Anyway, amidst the madness they only gone and done a signing yesterday. 3rd choice left back but will presumably shift to second if they can get rid of Telles.

It appears that the squad (I'm assuming only the expensive 1st teamers) have had a 25% pay cut
Ron is probably peeved at the principle of it not being his fault..... (and arguably so). I guess this means his next club just need to match/beat £360k a week
Less flippantly, if the pay cut isn't in their contracts, can MU do it?

Lifted from unverified sources on Twitter so treat with a pinch of salt... but amusing if even half true:
United offered Pogba 14 million euro a year, he asked for 20.
He was sure that Barça, Real and PSG would call him a free agent.
There were no offers, he goes to Turin with a salary of 8 million euro per year.

Showed potential but I did read one report that senior players were a bit puzzled at the amount of game time he got at the expense of others. Too early to be sure I guess, could push on but could be another Januzaj…

He did ok and is a good squad player with plenty of potential, but probably falls into that bracket of player that has come through the youth system and can do a job but possibly isn't the one who will turn a top 6 team into title challengers. We will see, but still happier to someone like have him with plenty of energy and commitment as a squad player rather than the more talented but lazy and temperamental Martial say.

It’s maybe a bit too soon, as he probably still sees himself winning CLs etc. Can potentially see him as the Brady of soccer over there, though, playing a starring role in his early-mid 40s.

Surely we will only let him go if it is an all encompassing deal with only one year left on his current contract?!! If no one can afford what he is asking for then he either has to lower his expectations or stay and show a bit of integrity, like Del Piero did when Juventus were relegated:
