TFF 2022/23

Post by Darbyand »

All the noises from Telegraph Towers are that it will go ahead again next season though as ever there were some crackpot ideas mentioned in the end of season survey. Hopefully enough people will have said they were terrible and it will proceed similar to last year. Probably too much to hope they'll sort out the mis-classification of 433 strikers being labelled as midfielders. Or under-pricing/dodgy scoring of defenders etc etc. Anyway, whilst we wait, and my reason for posting: here's the first TFF fixture grid of the season:

Looks like all the real world forwards in a 433 formation are now TFF forwards too. A brilliant move if it sticks.

Didn’t something similar happen last season and then the vocal minority got them all swapped back?

What do you think it means for strategy? You play a pick and stick gk/def/mid and blow your transfers on rotating strikers because the balance of the game is skewed with so many good strikers.

Set up my spreadsheet with these values and the team I finished with (see my blog on here) would be 52.5.

Yep. All the sob stories of not being able to pick the 6 big name strikers they know.

They can call Salah a midfielder if they like as long as they ban 433, 352 and 442!

First thought is that there'll be plenty of times you permanently want 3 up front. Which brings back 433 or even 343... I'm not sure I ever used either last season. I see they've priced virtually all the reliable Liv/City/Chelsea defenders at 4.5m+ too which possibly also reduces attractiveness of 5 at the back ...at least until the bargains emerge.

In summary you'll have to make hard choices, not be able to have 4 or 5 regular goalscorers in your team every week and need to get creative with midfield choices.

I have found a few great enablers. Tbh i've not really put much effort into TFF for a few seasons as it was all about block defences before and i kind of found myself lagging behind and losing interest.

Interesting but they’ve only really reclassified the real big hitters like Salah, Son, Mahrez. Other players who play the same position in real terms are still midfielders, Bowen, Saka, Grealish, Raphina etc. Not sure it’s quite right and suspect it’s been published early for feedback on the socials

The trouble is we still need half a starting line-up as it stands! Johnson is the obvious one, if he’s priced as provisionally listed could be great value… but the only others I think really pencilled in right now are the three CBs (risky for a promoted side, though I think we could be OK defensively) and Yates (solid performer but can’t see him being a points machine in the PL). We need a couple of wing-backs, a creative midfielder and a number 9, any decent additions in those positions might become enablers.

The Brennan Johnson price is a joke at 2.5m. Just glancing through the prices they seem to try to price strikers at 3pts per million. Johnson outscores that just by appearances alone so assuming he doesnt get dropped he outscores players like Salah in points per million without getting a single assist or goal lol.

It looks like we are signing Taiwo Awoniyi, Dean Henderson and with the clause to buy which leaves the door open for Garner to return. Talk of Gibbs White and Nico Williams joining as well. Our players are all getting priced as though we are a bottom 3 team and i think we'll outperform that.

Yeah, newly promoted defenders are obviously high risk but there has to be points potential among the attacking players, potentially including wing-backs classed as defenders.

I think it's a good move to semi-launch early to build up interest but not commit to prices. There's a few targets of transfer speculation that would become no-brainers if they were locked in at the current price but joined one of the big teams i.e Cucurella. There's an element of that every year but best to delay it another 3 or so weeks to see if a few conclude.
