Two big guns of League One going at it again in front of another 40,000 crowd. The Hillsborough Kop is still an impressive sight. Strange that given all the redevelopments and new stadia that happened largely as a consequence of the disaster there, due to the club’s financial issues over the years it’s the one ground that looks pretty much frozen in time, even the infamous Leppings Lane stand now with the symbolic empty seats at the front of the lower tier.

Since ‘that game’ capacity is a little lower than that, not only because of Leppings Lane lower tier usually being closed. It’s related, capacity was reduced when proper H&S & Risk Assessments were done for the ground and surrounding area.

It could have been 40K+ though, we could have sold a few thousand more tickets for the game. And should we get to the Final we could take 50K+ based on 2016 numbers. On that occasion half the Hull seats seemed not to have Hull fans in them!

Maybe. If there was misfortune it was the error in the first game. Fans forums are angry that we once again conceded in the last few minutes - before tonight it was 18 points dropped in the last 10 minutes. As well as uncharacteristically causing the goal on Friday, Hutch wobbling off with concussion was a factor tonight too, he’s the experienced organiser in the back three. It also meant that Palmer had to come on in the back three rather than at full back. Consequently Mendez-Laing coming on at wing back was very positive but at the same time risky and he was at fault for not doing the defensive part of the role in the lead up.
But that all detracts from Sunderland. I thought they executed their game plan very well. Not pretty, but pretty effective. They disrupted the flow and they took their chance even if it was a goal that could have been cut out at source, as above.

As for the Owls, we need to keep Bannan next year. And keeping more players fit through the season’d be useful too.
