Re: Speedway
I had to to dig deep to find a thread on Speedway but there is one, albeit not too informative....
Sad news this https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-b ... m-61126833
Loved his speedway commentary on BT along with Kalvin Tatum, a great double act. Commentated a lot on darts too and probably more on here will recognise his voice from that sport, but it's speedway that I will remeber him for.
52 is no age. RIP

Re: Speedway
I just don't know who will replace him - his speedway knowledge went way back to the 70s when he was a kid. To find someone with that knowledge and also the voice, see the clip below
https://www.bt.com/sport/watch/video/cl ... l-ever-see
Only a few years older than me and there's a picture of him on the net with 85 World Champ Erik Gundersen, who I saw back at Cradley Heath as an 11 year old, along with a few others. Standing on the bend, getting pelted with gravel, seeing guys balancing on their bikes at 60 mph and the odd one coming off...really daring boys own stuff.

Re: Speedway
Been an on-and-off speedway fan much of my life. I think I first came across it on World of Sport way back when, ended up watching a bit of grass track featuring the likes of Simon Wigg and was given a gift of a hospitality visit to the Cardiff SGP in 2010 (the noise in a closed Millennium Stadium was extraordinary).
But on TV the commentary was always top drawer. Dave Lanning in my early days and Nigel Pearson later on. The commentary needs to keep up with a dangerous fast moving sport while making sense of what those watching can already see. Nige did an outstanding job of it, and helped make Kelvin Tatum the excellent communicator he is today. Having seen the tributes made to him he didn't just love the sport but he loved and supported the people in it. You can't ask more than that. RIP Scoop

Re: Speedway
Other way around for me, know nothing about speedway but know him well from the darts. When I saw the references to a darts commentator here I initially thought it was Rod Studd whoβs also been unwell recently, those two and Stuart Pyke made up the main trio of βnon-playerβ commentators in recent years since the Waddell etc. era ended. Darts commentators tend to have other strings to their bow with the other two I think also doing rugby league (and it always seemed strange to hear John Gwynne doing football match reports on Soccer Saturday!)
Itβs no age anyway, in fact similar to that of some of the top active darts players. Will clearly be missed in more than one sporting arena.

Re: Speedway
Speedway appears in a similar position to dog racing in the UK, gradually fading away as tracks close (if without the added animal cruelty issue, the bikes donβt complain too much )

When I went in the late 60's they were all(?) combined with Dog Tracks; but not necessarily the other way round.

Re: Speedway
Was never really into Speedway but have been to Monmore Green a few times with my Uncle in the 80's (Sam Ermolenko years ). My Uncle was a mechanic so got up close with the bikes in the paddock, but its only a vague memory now - can't really remember much of the racing. Can't believe its still going. Not heard it mentioned for years.
Brother used to race Grass Track and Stock car as well, so spent a few Sundays at Hednesford and High Ercall tracks, again back in the 1980's. It was all just brilliantly amateur back then - walking around the cars / bikes chatting about engines and mods. Health and Safety regs were pretty non-existent
Talking about motor sport my dentist had a Le Mons car back in the day. Big V8 Aston Martin engine and my Uncle was his mechanic as well, I've been round Silverstone with him (me in the passenger seat) at 200+ mph when I was about 13. Absolutely terrifying - not so much the acceleration or the speed but the braking. Every corner I pretty much thought we were going to die He was an interesting guy - was also Ozzy Osbournes dentist for a while. My auntie worked for him so I've seen Ozzy a few times after hours when me and my Uncle were picking her up. That a whole other story though

Re: Speedway
Grass track is very similar - I don't think they have brakes either.
Speedway being back is like the 3rd pillar of Spring having started with the Masters and Paris-Roubaix the other 2
The commentary on Eurosport is a tad understated without Nige........

Re: Speedway
it was grass track cars rather than bikes, and they definitely did have brakes, not that you used them apart from at the end of the race
Mk2 escort, RWD, Diff locked, interior all removed apart from a seat and fire extinguisher, roll cage added and doors welded (and cut down so you could get in). Great fun

Re: Speedway
Eurosport also have the English League, with a match on tomorrow evening
With Cycling and Snooker Eurosport kinda rocks
Someone should put on short-track speedskating with fancy lights, music etc....
