Away goals set to be scrapped

Post by forestfan »

Looks like UEFA are likely to ratify a proposal to get rid of the away goals rule from European competitions.

I’ve never been a great fan of it, it often seems an unjust way to go out, particularly when you draw both legs. And continuing to apply it this season when home advantage has been negated by empty stadia and some matches have been played on neutral grounds was somewhat bonkers. But it’s existed for many decades, and will significantly change the dynamic of European knockout ties. More penalty shoot-outs is good for the neutral though, especially if they’re like the one we saw this week...

A very bad move IMO. It may not be perfect (as you note) but at least teams knew where they stood and games were very active as one team was always 'losing'.

With away goals the 'losing' team has to attack but now both teams will just get scared of losing and you will get dull knockarounds before the inevitable penalty lottery.

I say "lottery" but if you have De Gea in goal then it is a lottery where you failed to get yourself a ticket....
