SPOTY 2019

Post by footy666 »

SPORTS PERSONALITY 2019......Who will win?, What events are coming up in 2019?....

EVENTS:

Cricket World Cup
Rugby World Cup
World Swimming Champs
Athletics World Championships

Quite a few big events this year.

Cricket World Cup - England are favourites.

Rugby World Cup - England have a chance.

World Swimming Champs - Peaty expected golds.

Athletics - Dina Asher Smith.

Golf - Decent possibility of a Brit winning a major.

F1 - Decent possibility of Hamilton winning another title.

Snooker - Decent chance of O'Sullivan winning another major and reaching the figure of 1000 centuries.

Tennis - Murray back?

Boxing - Joshua and Fury.

Pretty difficult to pick someone out as we have some of the best athletes in the world in all of these sports.

Based on my betting strategy I'd vote for Ronnie O'Sullivan....I simply love the high odds the bookies put on him - I feel he would get a lot of votes if he was put into the shortlist.

It's too difficult to pick out a winner from the rest. Assuming Joshua fights Fury and Wilder in 2019 and wins both fights....then I'd probably give it to him, but usually they have rematches and if Joshua fights Wilder then he'll probably only fight Wilder this year, twice.

You forgot to mention Womens Football World Cup - where we are one of the favourites.

Maybe for a BBCPC pick on the shortlist but the public at large still don't care about women's football (still AKA Monkey Tennis to many). Would a World Cup win change ('one of' the favourites maybe but still v.unlikely) that enough?

Owen Farrell currently 20/1 at Hills.

Given that England are now odds-on to win the 6 Nations and are also now firmly established as second favourites (9/2) behind the All-Blacks for the World Cup, I'd say that was a very decent price.

The World Cup final is on November 2nd so the timing couldn't be much better in terms of being fresh in the memory come awards night.
Remember that the last time they won the World Cup in '03, top points scorer Jonny Wilkinson finished ahead of captain Martin Johnson in a Rugby Union 1-2 on SPOTY night.
Farrell is both captain and likely top-scorer so, in the event of an England win, if any team member is going to get the nod from the BBC it will surely be him.

Don't think that needs to happen as he has already banked the World Cup and then the most incredible innings I have ever seen and I have been watching Test cricket since 1975 and also witnessed Viv Richards in full flight

I’d assume Stokes still overwhelming favourite, but personally after this morning I’d have Maro Itoje, Tom Curry & Sam Underhill ahead of him. I can’t recall ever seeing anything like that level of performance before. Unbelievable.

The difficulty is that picking one player out of the RWC team is going to be a tough job. Presumably Farrell will be the nominee if we win it, unless someone else scores a hat-trick in the final or something... but it’s very much a team effort.

Well, there hasn’t been a lot of sport to be fair... perhaps should have postponed it and had two next year to cover off Olympics, Euros, Ryder Cup etc?

If we’re considering off the field efforts then Rashford deserves it but would that be seen as making it too political? :?

Last one being announced on The One Show soon. I'm struggling to think who it could be. I'd like it to be Tao Geoghan Hart but it will probably be an egg chaser or at least a non English male to keep up BBC PC quotas.

Not sure he'll win the "popular vote"

Hamilton short odds on, Ronnie 2nd, Fury 3rd at 7s

Well, there aren’t a lot of high-profile candidates this year due to the depleted calendar... but winning a sixth world title at the age of 44 is pretty good going, I think he’d have made the shortlist of 10 or so in a normal (or at least non-Olympic) year.

Probably because 95% of people haven’t heard of them, and they want it to be a public award not one earned through a campaign from fans of a niche sport (which has come close to happening with rugby league players in the past, when nobody south of Sheffield or north of York would have voted for them...)

TGH will have his day if and when he wins the Tour de France or Olympic gold, which are the only things that register with the vast majority here. And Superbikes isn’t exactly competitive these days, though I guess you could say the same about F1...
