Spurs

For most FPL teams, it is fairly clear where the issues are and they tend to involve one player or place in the team.

And then there is Tottenham.

Vertonghen/Sanchez … well that is the fairly simple one to see, and what the answer is I do not know. Is Vertonghen about to leave and so is out because his head is distracted, or the club want him to avoid injury? Guess we will find out soon when the MC game lineup appears. I had wondered earlier this month if he might end up at MC, but there you go.

It is the midfield that really confuses me. Moura, Sissoko, Lamela and Ndombele. But Eriksen, assuming he stays, will be back. As will Son from GW3. But then there is Alli (once fit). And Lo Celso. And Sessegnon (although I guess he is seen as defence). Will all of these guys play as starters? Surely Poch is not going to make too many changes before MC, stability would make more sense for a game of that magnitude.

Does that mean GW3 could see 4-5 changes in one go?

Depends on Sessegnon and Son fitness

I doubt Pep would blood Sessy against Bernado or Mahrez, and Son Erikson you'd assume if fit would replace Lamela Moura. It's also a game Potch knows he can't defend and win, best to try and score and draw .

Aurier may start against Sterling if fit but tbh it won't make much difference, Sterling was sensational at the weekend

What has Poch done in the past when Levy did his shopping in the last Hours of the TW?

Son is still suspended ans Sessegnon is out with a hamstring injury for a few more weeks. The worry for me is that they looked out of sorts with all the changes and no Eriksen. The transfer window for european clubs is open for a few more weeks and Eriksen is out of contract at the end of the season. He wants to go to Madrid and now Spurs have Lo Celso they may let him go. if that happens it may take a few weeks for them to settle into a new style / formation with Lo Celso instead of Eriksen. Until then though you'd think Eriksen has to play in the big games against Man City and Arsenal

Sissoko was probably the worst player during this GW1... amongst ALL teams/players.
We'd probably need blahblah's ability with metaphors on LSD, combined with Mose's statistical analysis on the HAL-9000 to aptly define how awful Sissoko was.
Just to make the league interesting we need Spurs to be a stronger more consistent team this year and Poch won't get there with Eriksen out of the picture and Sissoko running things.

This is very apt yet feels strangely kind to Sissoko.

I feel sorry for Sissoko, Potch was asking to much of him in that set up, he was excellent last year in their more traditional 4 3 2 1

I suspect against City it will be 4 2 3 1 with Eriksen back, and one of Winks or Sissoko dropped

I guess Lo Celso has been bought for life after Eriksen but he is no Eriksen. This is a good thread. A lot of question marks with Spurs at the moment and it seems they have shot themselves in the foot a little with the way they have managed their wage structure and players now not playing ball and running down their contracts. Key first team players on like £40k-£70k a week when you have bench warmers from some clubs on £300k + a week.

I'd like to see Vertonghen back this week. Saw a pic of him laughing his ass off training so don't think he's pissed off to bad.

Personally I'd drop Lamela for Eriksen, Sanchez for vertonghen and leave it at that against city.

Going forward I'd say in order of likely to start

Lloris
Kane
Son
Alderweireld
Ndombele
Vertonghen
Lo Celso (if Eriksen leaves)

I'd like to get a better stab at a full back as we do play these guys high up.

The one certainty is Spurs need that playmaker on as the 3 in midfield against Villa aren't going to find that killer ball.

This isn't really true anymore. Yeah spurs don't pay the 250 grand bench fodder salaries, but Kane is on 200k+ with bonuses, alli near a hundred, Eriksen got offered as much as kane to stay (apparently). The wage structure isn't what it used to be.

Celso to me is an odd one, both new players seem to be similar in position dont understand reasoning as can't see both in same side and thats a lot of money to put out for a bench player especially one on loan as he is. Ndombele took goal well but did not look match fit, when Eriksen came on looked different side, they came to life, not that know great deal about new players but neither seem a match to Eriksen interesting to see how they line up next game

I had them pencilled in as going more 433 with less marauding FB's and 2 from Moura, Son, Lame la and Sess providing the width. Erik or Dele could fit in as the front one of the 3, but I had Poch as planning to be without Erik.

Hope they try that out against us would improve our chances of getting something from game, would have thought wide player would have been high on shopping list, Winks in my view will be a top player for then and to me new players will limit his game time.

It is actually quite interesting watching so many Clubs copy Klopp's 2 Lpool versions (with and without Coutinho). And then there is Ole's pace and direct counter attacking, which I struggle to see how that works against sides that sit back and counter them - but time will tell....

Your lot could be better than most expect (Nevin tipped you for top 4 after the Toon match) and could be more Klopp ver 2 with Tierney and Bellerin\M-N...

Maybe Poch is treading water while Zizou makes Fascist Madrid really bad before going there? I am far from convinced Spurs are a clear 3rd .....

I think the simple way of looking at it is.

Ndombele = new dembele
Lo Celso = new Eriksen (no10). Still hope Eriksen stays mind you!

Both could be intriguing at a later date. Ndombele would be very interesting if he is more willing to shoot than demebele was. Demebele took up the sort of position Ndombele scored from vs Villa a lot but never shot. Poch has told Ndombele to shoot as much as he can. Will he become a goal scorer. Dunno. He hasn't been at other clubs. I'm thinking yaya toure though lol.

Lo celso. Fairly obvious. If Eriksen leaves and he takes up No 10 then he has some pretty good goal scorers to target.

IMO Spurs biggest problem this past two years has not been fatigue or Wembley. Their biggest problem has been trying to replace the Dembele-Wanyama pivot that worked so well in their last season at WHL. Wanyama was one of the best ball-winners in the league that year, probably only second to Kante, and Dembele was the engine of that midfield using his dribbling to progress the ball from the middle third to the final third, creating space for more advanced players on the pitch. Spurs picked up 86 points that year, only second to Conte's Chelsea, and Kane averaged ~7.5 ppg that year in FPL; I don't think he has cracked >6 in any other season.

After that season both Dembele and Wanyama succumbed to injuries and Poch has experimented heavily since to replace them. Sissoko was brought in but is a pretty limited player, Winks is talented but young and raw, and Dier is really a midtable level player. It didn't help that Alderweireld fell into contract disputes; he is an excellent passer of the ball and his replacement, Sanchez, is decidedly less assure.

The key with Spurs will be if Ndombele can live up to his price tag (or if Winks makes a jump). If he doesn't (or Eriksen leaves) I would expect more of the same of the last two years.

I've learnt my lesson from past years (and years and years) of playing FPL games (I never, ever, ever select a Spurs defender having been burnt repeatedly in past seasons) and will only be taking Kane, I can't see any real value elsewhere either, half the team is a rotation risk, defence is unpredictable (in terms of who starts and clean sheet potential). Add in the amount of games spurs have (and the number of injuries they seem to get) and the fact they don't have a clear good run of good fixtures at any point of the season I really can't see the reason to pick any of them besides Kane. The only potential being Son if he fires / Kane gets injured, but I can't justify 9.5m if Kane plays when there are many other better options below that price point. If Eriksen stays and is nailed on he may be worth a punt at some stage.
