Premier League v's National Lottery
He's a good question for the off season...
The National Lottery have recently said that over 5,100 people have won the lottery since it launched in 1994.
https://www.national-lottery.co.uk/life ... enty-years
I am wondering, have more people won the National Lottery or played in the Premier League?
Does anyone have the stats? / Can do the math?

Re: Premier League v's National Lottery
I will start this off...
There are 300-400 players who participate in a typical premier league season.
400 players x 27 seasons is 10,800.
But most of those players play for multiple seasons.
So the figure must be less than 10,800 but is it less than 5,100?

Wow, I knew someone here would know where to find the answer.bspittles wrote: ↑12 Jun 2019, 16:20 4089 according to https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top ... ppearances
So the number of National Lottery millionaires since it started in 1994 is over 5,100
and the number of people participating in a Premier League match since it started in 1992 is 4,089
So it is true that more people have won the National Lottery jackpot than have played in the Premier League (even though the lottery started 2 years later).
That's a great pub quiz question.

Re: Premier League v's National Lottery
Hard to tell from their website but that 5100 seems to include Euromillions and Scratchcards - also how do they count consortiums and couples etc???
Lotto used to be a 1 in 13 million chance of winning but that has got smaller (i.e. 1 in well over 13 million) since they changed it. Also not every winner is a millionaire and there are more and more rollovers etc.
(Pedantry necessary if you are ever thinking of setting a quiz question!)
(I'd also reckon more than 300-400 players play in PL every year, 360 are in matchday squads every weekend so I'd imagine in nearer the 500 or even 600 mark, 25-30 per club.)

Which are we more likely to see - a Lottery Millionaire play for a Premier League side or a Premier League footballer win the Lottery?

I can confirm that if you’re over 40, crap at football and of below average fitness you’re significantly more likely to win the lottery

Re: Premier League v's National Lottery
I won £20 on the lottery the other week and a lucky dip just this week. Still going to play for Liverpool one day though (mind you I am of above average fitness).forestfan wrote:I can confirm that if you’re over 40, crap at football and of below average fitness you’re significantly more likely to win the lottery
