Thanks yeah, very happy to get to HM and, yes, do want to break 30 mins for 5k. That best time was a training run just last week, so I’m getting there :D

Main focus this year will be 10k races, planning to do half a dozen or so, next one is on Easter Saturday. Hoping to get my PB down (1h 6m currently). Also have another HM lined up in October. Can’t see me ever getting up to a full marathon, a HM seems quite long enough, so very impressed with anyone who has managed that distance, well done!

As an occasional Reading parkrunner (I usually do Prospect parkrun a couple of miles away from there) I hope to be running with you sometime in the near future.

Not really in any kind of running form at the moment - at least not for me. Did a 2:19 half marathon in Fleet last month and have struggled at Parkrun lately, but not long ago I did a 55ish minute 10k at Goodwood.

Don't think there's any secret for me to unlock though. Just need to lose an additional stone of weight I don't need

One minor change to update  :D

After 3 months out with sciatica, I returned on 23rd Feb to coincide with the first running of "Cancer 5k your way", with my local parkrun being the first in the Greater Manchester region to set it up. The movement has a 5k being run towards the end of each month and is for people suffering with cancer, families of those affected and medical professionals involved in their care. I lost my mum to it 12 years ago so the connection is a bit tenuous but I wanted to show my support and planned to go round gently to test my back out. The man who set it up has terminal prostate cancer and went from training for a half-marathon to his world being upended overnight. There's evidence that running during and after treatment has beneficial health effects and hence the 5k Your Way. I set off chatting to a man called Graham who also has terminal cancer but gets out and does so much running that I was in awe of him. We were going very gently and at one point I thought of moving off ahead to test myself out, but decided to stay with him as he was finding it hard, having run each of the previous 6 days! :o We got round in a shade under 39 minutes - my back tested out ok, pleasant company and if you can find one of these nearby, it's worth considering joining in. It turned out Graham had driven 2 hours to support the organiser!

Since then I've managed 7 more and without any reaction in my back yet. I timed the end of March for my 50th run (and the next 5k your way) and my times are coming back down as I get more into shape. Last Saturday saw me clock 22:45 which is my 5th fastest parkrun ever! The plan is to crack 22 for the 5k and 47 for the 10k this year.

Good stuff el p. Some very motivating stories in the parkrun world.

Minor niggles are stopping me improving (less training runs in between = less fitness). Not sure if I lost those niggles and got fit again that I'd ever get near my sub 24 days as I was perfectly fit then (and below 10 stone with a concave belly!) and age is catching up.

Took me 3 and a half years but I finally got my 50 shirt this week :D

Is anyone else doing the Running Challenges? I was 1 second off the Groundhog achievement last week.

Not heard of the challenges thing but I'll have a go.

Did my first for a while - 20.36. About a minute and a half behind my best from 5 years ago - not sure I can get back to that level but will give it a go.

Cracked the 22 minute mark on my first ever tourist parkrun, at Druridge Bay Country Park in Northumberland - which is a brilliant setting for anyone near it or travelling that way. It's run around a lake and there's a stunning beach a 2-minute walk away. Now to see if I can break 22 minutes on my home turf...

Back with a bang. After enforced rests due to injuries to both knees, I changed midweek training from 8-10k tarmac run to 5k grass run and/or 6k rowing machine. Swapped home course from tarmac Gunpowder to grass Roding Valley. PB hunting today at Hackney Marshes, smashed it by 22 seconds. 8-)

Excellent stuff. I was happy enough this morning to do my best time in 8 visits to my local run :D .

Still about 9 minutes outside my all time PB  (2 3/4 outside my course PB). Physical problems are a pain in more ways than one. Wish I could fix mine, docs were useless and my physio is helping in some ways but overall the exercises seem to be making it worse rather than better :(

Nice work!

I've had a spell of less running over the summer recovering from a couple of niggles but got back into it with a 5k around the Olympic Park in 24:38. Another race next weekend in Greenwich Park then back to training for another race or two in November

Maybe I need a break. Haven't run a 24:38 or anything like in ages (looked it up and my last sub 25 was in 2016! but I did do a 25:23 this January)

I've averaged 54 parkruns a year over the last 2 years - only missing one each winter when all the local ones were called off because of bad weather (52 Saturdays + 3 festive bonuses - 1 cancellation). Churning them out is now more my obsession as I'll never set PBs again  parkrun 300 on Xmas Day if there are no more cancellations or injuries/illness. Would love to get to 500 before my dog gets too old and has to retire (she is 8 now - will be at least 12.5 when/if we get to 500) - or I do......

Left knee GP said osteo arthritis...painkilling gel and strap. I found gels ineffective. What seems to have worked is adding 1500mg Curcumin with black pepper to my minerals cocktail. Eventually improved with rest and reduced runs mostly on grass.

Right knee scan result osteo arthritis plus slight meniscal tear which GP said wouldn't get better without treatment. Internet says it could and luckily it did.

I am planning a 3 week Florida trip in January in case arthritis is weather related.

6 years (and nearly 300 parkruns) ago today.....

murf wrote: 02 Nov 2013, 12:58 We finally made our debut today.

I didn't feel that good (more energy than body - I still blame the early start) and stopped for a brief walk 4 times but got better as the run went on. Also not easy running with a dog when there are so many people on quite narrow paths. I deliberately started slowly to keep out of harm's way and find it hard to run as slowly as maybe I should (esecially with a keen dog egging me on!) so was generally overtaking people (except when walking!) so know I could go much quicker if fitter.

They had 'pacers' today and I was a bit miffed when I realised that was happening and the bloke with '32' on his vest was a fair way ahead of me. Overtook him in the last km and finished in:

31:50, 204th place

I was targetting 30 minutes but that was based on 10 minute mile pace for 3miles. 5km is actually just overout 3.1 miles so a proper target is 31:06. Next week/time....
6 years ago but only about 4 seconds difference in my time! My original course was pretty flat and my local one now is stupidly hilly so that is my excuse (not 6 years of ageing - although that doesn't help).

I haven't done a lot of parkruns these past few years. Maybe 5 a year. Since I am targetting sprint and Olympic distance triathlons next season I need to work on my 5km times so my target is now to get as close to 20 minutes as possible. Challenge sub 20 in 2020 starts now!

Just 21 seconds to go! 20 minutes is a cracking pace especially in your age category (same as mine these days). I just about hit a peak speed of 4min/km (3:55 briefly today) on a steep downhill  A few years since I got my PB of sub-24 or even a sub-25. So used to running on hilly courses these days that on the rare occasions I do a flattish parkrun I struggle to maintain a decent pace (for me) for a full flat 5k!

One of my neighbours is in training for a half-ironman. Me and my dog Faye would love to join him but I can't really swim and she isn't very good on a bike.....

Thanks Murf. 21 seconds is still over 5 seconds per km but hopefully achievable with some good winter training.

I did my first half distance triathlon last year (5 hours 6 minutes), but now want to focus on shorter higher intensity events. My swimming is rubbish though and I don't like swimming at all!

Good luck Neath Boy!

I'd fancy a triathlon at some point but my swimming puts me off - my crawl technique is rubbish and though I spent a few years doing regular breaststroke, that's not much use!

No improvement on my first sub-22 min parkrun yet (and yet to crack it on my home course), but a couple of weeks ago I did my local festive 10k which is on a fast course. Smashed my PB down from 47:07 to 45:49 which was much better than even my best hopes. Targets for next year will be a 21:30 parkrun and a sub-45 min 10k.

Happy Christmas running all - I'm also planning on doing the New Year's Day double parkrun :D

Don't let the swimming put you off. Mine is rubbish and I don't enjoy it. Just do enough to get through the swim then start racing!

I am targetting a sub 20 5km next year, and sub 43 10km.

Back into the high 20’s now. 20.52 last Saturday for my fastest one since 2016.
21-28 today but ran comfortably but pushed last km in 3.54 so I am hoping sun 20 minutes will be possible this year.

Good luck all.

I ran 53 parkruns in 2018 and 53 again last year.

This year my target was the maximum of 55, starting with a new year double. Was going well until I overslept by an hour and a half this morning, totally missing my 9am run. Did the 10:30 though so my record is still on (1 down, 53 to go).

New Year's Day double for me in Dinton Pastures and then Maidenhead. Both were too busy for fast times but did ok.

Got lots of running planned this year.

534 is good. Think the record is about 750.

I'm now on 301. Hope my body lasts to 500 (blue club shirt) but I'm slowly falling apart. My dog has done 301 too but she'll be nearly 13 by the time we get to 500 so can't expect her to still be going strong.

Fast times and PBs are distant memories so glad I found parkrun when I did.
