Tottenham Hotspur will host Chelsea at Wembley Stadium in an 8pm kick-off on Tuesday 8 January followed by Burton Albion visiting Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday 9 January at 7:45pm.

As a result of potential fixture congestion, the 2nd-leg dates cannot be confirmed at this current time.

EFL Statement

Confirmed dates for the first leg ties were released earlier this week but finalising arrangements for the return legs is being held up by a complicated and congested fixture schedule.

The challenge comes as a result of Club involvement in multiple competitions, and the EFL is working closely with the Premier League and the Football Association to reach an acceptable solution for all parties.

The situation as it stands is as follows:

Both Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have games currently scheduled for Sunday 20 January, and therefore would wish to avoid playing their second legs on Tuesday 22 January.

If either Club was asked to play on Thursday 24 January, then their potential involvement in the FA Cup Fourth Round needs to be considered the following weekend, as the FA cannot guarantee scheduling either side on Sunday 27 January if either Tottenham Hotspur or Chelsea draw Newcastle United or Manchester City.

This is because Newcastle United play Manchester City in a Premier League live television game the following Tuesday 29 January which cannot move.

A decision will therefore be taken with the involvement of all parties when the options are clearer following the completion of the FA Cup Round Four Draw.

Given Man City's PL games on Sun 20th and Tue 29th on TV, you'd expect their Burton game to fall on Wed 23rd, and Burnley FA Cup game on Sat 26th.

Spurs-Chelsea league cup game can go on Thu 24th with little issue now, both can play FA Cup on Sunday (Palace v Spurs - both have Wednesday league games following; and Chelsea v SheffW/Luton - just will shift Chelsea's game to Wednesday)

And I'd put short odds on Arsenal-Man U being the Friday night FA cup game on BBC :)

So apart from Bournemouth v Chelsea, NONE of the midweek Pl games scheduled for Tuesday January 29th will need to be moved

I think this had a huge bearing on the TV picks shown above

Tuesday 29 January 2019
Arsenal  v Cardiff
Fulham v Brighton
Huddersfield v Everton
Wolves v West Ham
Man Utd v Burnley
Newcastle v Man City

There IS the real possibility this season of fixture congestion

Due to the last midweek having a UEFA competition

There are only 2 Midweeks to fit in the rearranged games
Weds Apr 3rd
Weds Apr 24th

We now have
Chelsea
Man City
Brighton
Everton

Who could have 3 PL games to re arrange
Sat Feb 23rd
Sat Mar 16th
Sat Apr 6th

This all depends on the FA Cup Semi Finalists

Regarding query in previous post:

Another way of stating this is that only one of the four PL matches selected for TV on Sat-Sun 16-17 March is certain of going ahead: Ful v Liv.
Some or all of the other three could be postponed to a midweek date in April if any team below* reaches the FA Cup quarter-finals due to be played over the same March weekend.

Code: Select all

16-Mar-19 Man Utd* v Man City* 12:30 SKY
17-Mar-19 Spurs v C Palace* 12:00 SKY
17-Mar-19 Fulham v Liverpool 14:15 SKY

I worded the reply badly

But if Chelsea beat Man U
Get drawn at home
And are still in Europa League on Thursday 14th March

The match at Chelsea must be played Sun 17th March Monday is International Break
So Fulham may be moved on Police advice

Wolves were due to play United in the league on FA cup semi final weekend but one of them will qualify so that'll need to move. Have I imagined it or has the rule about PL games not being scheduled on UEFA competition nights been relaxed? If United go out to PSG they'll have plenty of spare midweeks.

PSG are live on TV on Weds at 8

The only game that possibly needs to be played in a UEFA midweek is Cardiff v Brighton

Weds 3rd
Weds 24th
Midweeks are clear

To re arrange the Mar 16th and Apr 6th games postponed

I guess the only issue is can Sky show a Thurs live game on Apr 4th ??

It would mean that club having to play a Sunday Semi Final
