TFF chit chat 22nd and 23rd September

Post by morganb »

SATURDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER

Fulham 12:30 Watford

Saturday's early match sees Watford travelling south to Craven Cottage to take on Fulham (a stadium famous for its status of international megastar John Craven of Newsround fame). Watford's early season unbeaten run was stopped last weekend by United and Fulham's recent results haven't been great though Mitrovic looks good value.

Burnley 15:00 Bournemouth

The first of the 3 o'clocks is a B derby - lowly Burnley up against Europe-chasing Bournemouth. The Burnley of last season is nowhere to be seen however this game is at Fortress Turf Moor so perhaps a cleansheet is on the cards. Bournmouth are quite free-scoring with King, Fraser and Wilson.

Cardiff 15:00 Man City

The Welsh Wizards from Wales welcome the Champions, Manchester City, to the Cardiff Stadium. City will still be reeling from their mid-week Champions League defeat but will probably be too strong for Cardiff, who are still seeking their first Prem win.

Crystal Palace 15:00 Newcastle

Down in SE25, Roy’s Boys welcome Rafa’s Chappies to Selhurst Park. Zaha was back from injury last week and promptly scored the winning goal then had a rant about referees protecting him during games. Newcastle are rooted in the bottom three so probably a home win.

Leicester 15:00 Huddersfield

To the King Power next where Huddersfield are the visitors. The Terriers lie in 18th position and have found both goals and cleansheets hard to come by. Leicester are sat comfortably in mid-table and appear to have found a good ‘un in Maddison.

Liverpool 15:00 Southampton

Liverpool come into this game off of the back of a hard-fought win in Europe. Will that affect their performance here? Southampton have been scoring goals of late but Ings is unavailable against his parent club. So have the doubts set in about having Salah yet?

Man Utd 15:00 Wolves

At the Theatre of Lucky Clover, Wolverhampton Wanderers are the visitors. United had an easy win in mid-week and will be hoping to continue that form here against newly-promoted Wolves who don’t look out of their depth in the Premier League. Is early-season enabler Neves for the chop after today's game?

Brighton 17:30 Tottenham

Saturday’s late match sees Spurs rolling up to the Am Ex to take on Brighton and Hove Albion. Tottenham were one-nil up but they threw it away on Tuesday, hopefully they won’t repeat that feat here. Murray is probably on better form that Kane at the moment.

SUNDAY 23RD SEPTEMBER

West Ham 13:30 Chelsea

I can’t believe my mince pies – it’s a London derby! West Ham are coming into this match off of the back of a good win up a Goodison. Yarmolenko looked lively. Chelsea played mainly a second string in Europe on Thursday, but Pedro played and took a bad knock so may not start today.

Arsenal 16:00 Everton

And finally, the last game of the weekend sees Everton travelling to North London to take on the Gunners. Arsenal are another team who played and won in Europe during the week but still didn’t achieve that elusive cleansheet. The Toffees have Richarlison back and possibly a debut for Mina.

I'll stick something on the injury thread in a moment but as a TFF habitué this is the first place I look. Mendy is out, from the City press conference:

Bit more Pep on @benmendy23: "He has a problem in his bone. Ankle/foot."

Difficult to know what to make of that but the reference to “bone” has me thinking a transfer will be required.

He is in all my teams so I’ll need to make a start now

My basic knowledge of the human skeleton* tells me the metatarsals are not in, or connected to, the ankle. Who is fibbing? (and do I just say 'sod it' and buy Alonso and forget about Mendy til he gets through a game?)

I’ll e-mail Pep and let you all know as soon as he gets back to me.

It does feel a bit like Mendy has a touch of the sick note about him. Maybe I convince myself of that and make the change.

Pedro must be a major doubt so that and the Mendy situation are a concern. Time to bring in Hazard and also monitor the Salah situation after their home game.

Mendy thing is annoying. Think I'll give him at least another week.

I transferred Mendy out last week - I can't find the info I read but I thought it was 'known' that he would miss 'a few' games.

.... and you know with City (amongst others) that any niggles can easily be given a rest with rotation.

Really didn't want to get rid of Mendy already and was willing to give him couple of weeks but now the uncertainty over his return means he's gone.

Sounds like the first goal of the weekend was one for trendy interior designers:

Gray (Hughes)

[Not seen in yet but text suggests cleared to Hughes so no 2nd KC]

Hadn’t really considered Gray at £3.5. Dirt cheap. £0.8m less than Mitrovic. Oh well.

Mitrovic forced a good save twice late on, one parried away and one tipped onto the bar. Feeling happier about that switch than I was earlier.

Deflected Shaqiri goal for Liverpool (og??) - Mane and Robertson mentioned....

EDIT - TFF/OPTA/BBC giving it to Hoedt og

"Xherdan Shaqiri has been involved heavily so far and he plays a crucial part in the build-up to Liverpool's goal.

He cuts inside onto his right and whips it into the centre. Wesley Hoedt slides in, knowing Roberto Firmino is lurking behind, and the ball bounces off his thigh and rolls into the net.

Awful goal. But a goal is a goal."

Just seen this, worth a reminder for season ticket holders.

Nominate your Super 16s team ahead of Week 7 and you'll automatically be entered into a unique head-to-head league against 15 other managers. The deadline to nominate your team is midnight, Monday, September 24.

Winners get a free team for next year (wow) - but worth the effort of a team nomination. If you forget you don't get in.

Thought you'd got that wrong as I saw on text a goal credited to Bernard O'Silva but that was the follow up 2nd goal ('assist' credited to Sane)

PS Text commentary suggests a 2nd KC on 1st goal for Gund O'Gan. Lots of Irish in the Citeh team today.....
