Have I won, or does Higgins need to win Frames? This could be over well inside the 3rd Session the way he is playing...

Great game to pinch. Williams's touch is fantastic when he's on. All feel. Just drops the balls in, hardly slams anything. Perfect timing.

Two 40-somethings in the final, quite remarkable, I guess comparable to seeing Federer and Nadal contesting Grand Slam finals again... but perhaps a poor reflection on the younger generation and their temperament for the long game.

Re: 2018 Fantasy World Snooker - Now running
The kids aren't coming through now like they used to. These guys in the final were all kids in the 80s when the world and his dog played snooker. All the youngsters now are Chinese and that's where the game is extremely popular.
The one thing that should start to go when you are over 40 is your eyesight. Reardon's eyesight went, John Spencer suffered from double vision and if it wasn't for the glasses, Dennis Taylor wouldn't have been successful. Marcus Fu is struggling with his vision and it wouldn't surprise me if one of the "class of 92" eventually has an eyesight issue. The long potting tends to go. That was the case with Steve Davis, who is still a fair old player when breakbuilding.

Re: 2018 Fantasy World Snooker - Now running
Yeah, and Hendry similarly tailed off in his late 30s/early 40s and then quit as he was only motivated by winning. These two along with Ronnie, it’s remarkable they still have the potting ability they do.bluenosey wrote: ↑06 May 2018, 20:47The kids aren't coming through now like they used to. I’m surprised the Chinese haven’t taken over to a greater extent, Ding is now in his 30s and has won plenty of titles but always flatters to deceive at the Crucible, and none of the others who have followed him have really made it into the true elite.

Re: 2018 Fantasy World Snooker - Now running
Way back when there were "money" matches and then there was the Youth and Amateur set up, where players learned to win. Players (of a certain standard) can make a decent living by just potting and practicing break building, so they don't now how to battle and play matchplay; and this applies to most, if not all, of the Chinese players too.bluenosey wrote: ↑06 May 2018, 20:47The kids aren't coming through now like they used to. Trump had his eyes lazered just under 12 months ago - but his failings are the point above and a decidedly fragile action, under pressure.
I would disagree about Davis: his problem was that he wasn't a heavy enough points scorer when the likes of Hendry and then ROS, Higgins, Williams, Stevens et al appeared on the scene - possibly due to him rarely, if ever, using side. He was pretty much an automaton when playing snooker and just played within his capability re shot-making....

Re: 2018 Fantasy World Snooker - Now running
Yeah, the game moved on from Davis’s era due to the profile his generation gave it. The next generation had something extra. He was still in the top 16 into his 50s though I think, which was remarkable in itself.

Re: 2018 Fantasy World Snooker - Now running
Yep (from wiki):
At the 2005 UK Championship, held in York, Davis reached his 100th major career final,[66] and made his first appearance in the UK final since 1990.[37] En route he beat defending champion Stephen Maguire 9–8, a win which included a 145 break; and then Stephen Hendry 9–6 in the semi-finals to reach the final, where he lost 6–10 against Ding Junhui.[67][68] Before the World Championships Davis brushed off suggestions of retirement,[69] and he reached the second round, where he lost to Murphy.[70] Davis's performances through the 2006/2007 season, including reaching the UK Championship quarter-finals and the Welsh Open semi-finals, ensured he was still a top 16 player at the age of 50.[71]
Steve Davis during a match against Ville Pasanen in 2008
He dropped out of the top sixteen a year later,
There was some seriously good stuff played yesterday, and as per above, most\all of the "kids" would either been blown away, or not won the last 3....
Higgins will be a lot happier with this 10-7, than 12 months ago when ahead?

Was on the verge of putting the final score into the spreadsheet to get the league table out before the final ball was potted.

Re: 2018 Fantasy World Snooker - Now running
I'm no fan of Higgins but massive respect for getting back into the match with 5 frames on the spin.
Well done blah, happy with my 5th place.
Thanks again Shaggy for running this comp. An integral part of my World Championship experience!

Have to chalk that down to 'what could have been'. 4th.
Cheers for organiding and to everyone for playing. I watch / followed quite a bit of the tournament which I would never have done without this comp so thanks for that (seriously - I did enjoy the snooker!)

Ironically Williams using sightright and minimising his use of side wins him a world championship.
Congrats blah, thanks for running shaggy.
