Sunderland Fans' Most Popular Starting 11 for 2013/4

Post by Garyalanlawro »

Sunderland fans’ most popular starting 11 so far this season consisted of Vito Mannone in goal, three defenders (John O'Shea, Modibo Diakité and Phil Bardsley), four midfielders (Adam Johnson, Emanuele Giaccherini, Sebastian Larsson and Ki Sung-Yueng), with Fabio Borini, Stephen Fletcher and Jozy Altidore upfront.

Vito Mannone was an obvious choice; in addition to being the clear fan favourite in goal, he was also Sunderland’s most popular player, with over four-fifths of fans picking him for goalkeeper.

John O'Shea was Sunderland’s most popular defender (and 2nd-most popular player) with nearly four-fifths of fans picking him for the lineup. The ex-man United man was one of the few constants with fans in Sunderland’s defence: only three defenders were popular enough to make the cut for the average starting 11 - this is most likely due to unease among Sunderland fans as to the quality of their defensive lineup.

For example, Modibo Diakité was the next most popular player with almost three-quarters of fans including him in their lineup, but he was loaned to Fiorentina in the January transfer window – how popular was that decision with fans? Maybe no-one thought to ask them...

Adam Johnson was Sunderland’s most popular midfielder (and 4th-most popular player), with almost three-quarters of fans including him in the lineup. Emanuele Giaccherini lagged a bit behind, with Seb Larsson and Ki Sung-Yueng on pretty similar approval ratings. Not many surprises there - maybe the absence of Jack Colback and and Lee Cattermole? Both were casualties of Sunderland's popular midfield four, as Colback received a very respectable rating from almost half of fans (48%), while Cattermole got the vote from just under a third (32%) .

Upfront, Fabio Borini was Sunderland’s 5th-most popular player overall, with a just over two-thirds popularity rating. The ex-Liverpool man was very closely followed by Stephen Fletcher, with Jozy Altidore a more distant third; only sneaking into the starting 11, with just over half of fans including him in their lineups.

We have included all 11 players in a pitch-view on our blog (http://beatyourmanager.ie/blog/). We have ignored the ratings for players sold/loaned in the first transfer window (Kilgallon, Knott, McClean, N'Diaye, Sessegnon, Vaughan) and bought in during the second window (Alonso, Bridcutt, Dixon, Scocco, Ustari, Vergini, Watmore) as they were available for very few matches and their selection results may not be an accurate estimate of their popularity.
