We've got three strikers at the club. One has fallen apart and one is a 20 year old loanee. I don't think Lukaku's signing means anything but the fact it's an area we are short.

yep and whilst i have lambasted Kone for his abject performance in the league cup i think he will do alright for us

I see it lining up as suggested

---------------- Howard --------------
Coleman - Jagielka - Distin - Baines
Mirallas - Gibson - McCarthy - Pienaar
---------------- Barkley --------------
---------------- Lukaku --------------

with Barry replacing Gibbo when his glass legs/muscles crumble again!

leaving Subs bench of Robles/Heitinga/Alcaraz/Barry/Ossie/Jeli/Kone/

Back up
Deulofeu/Oviedo/Stones/Naismith/Hibbert/Gueye/Vellios/Duffy

I still want to know where this extra £14m is/had gone.....weve generated enough in tfer profits to have paid off all these loans that are costing us £5m a year in interest.........

Well Lukaku and Barry must be well over $10M in wages and loan fees?

Agreed but dont forget the wage bill is also lighter

Moyes
Neville
Hitz
Much
Felli £27.5m
Anichebe £6m
Junior (out on loan)

In
Martinez
Robles
Alcaraz Free
Kone thought to be £5m
McCarthy £13m
Lukaku
Barry

Yes the loan fees (partic Lukaku) need to be added

He played DM in the LC but I guess he does...new manager..new chance maybe.....he will have to do a lot to win over the fans I know...he went from player of the year to a shithouse bottling tackles losing headers and generally showing no desire

but ... hes still here and has been on the bench, maybe when alcaraz is fit he wont appear and in my bench above he can be replaced with oviedo

Thought Barry was outstanding today, turned the clock back, with Barckley not far behind. Enjoyed the game not sure if it was down to manager accepting he cant change them totally over night or the experienced players doing what was needed to get a result, but what ever reason was it got them what I thought was a deserved result, with a mixture of Wigan and Everton of old tactics.

Yup. I know he's got bags of experience, but even so I don't think I've seen a debutant look so comfortable and instantly at ease with his surroundings. Has a knack of always being in the right place at the right time, and used the ball wisely. I was impressed. Not a signing I was excited about at the time, but now I can see why the City fans on Twitter seemed collectively sorry to see him go. More of the same please, Gareth!

Pleased for Naismith. Didn't have a perfect game, far from it, but he did a lot of good as well. Testament to that was the 'best left-back in the world™' being hauled off by the special one cos he just couldn't cope! Also impressed by Martinez to have the confidence in his younger players (McCarthy, Stones & El Spaniard) and throwing them into that kind of atmosphere, despite the game being so frantic and still on a knife edge.

A good performance, and with Pienaar, Gibson, Kone, Alcaraz and Lukaku all still to come back into the fold. Plenty of reasons to be positive.

Agree re Barry...I too have been less than complimentary about him but he was everywhere, even seemed to have a yard of pace at times...but I was on the heavies

I also liked Martinez changing it up.....getting overrun so bring on McCarthy and put mirallas up top gave us mobility and options.....I must say I'm excited about adding Lukaku up top to that team

Just watched first half of Fulham v Everton - Deulofeu in the starting lineup : while he does seem to have a great set of skills, I start to wonder - he seems a bit selfish doesn't he? I mean in the whole game, when he's in attack, I saw him make a pass maybe three times (Im not sure if he gave the pass to Naismith when he scored though, but that doesn't change much) - ok maybe it wouldn't be that bad, I mean he is fast and can go past some of the defenders, but I think I didnt see any crosses from him and most of it was him trying to get past defenders in the box and then shooting from the left(mostly) of the goal. While I really enjoy him getting past so many players so often, I still think that sometimes he should make a pass to other players in such moments, (ok, not sometimes, there were few, but I mean he should do it more - if there are so many potentially good attacks). But maybe that's just me - what others who have seen him play think? Or maybe that's because he is used to Spanish Liga B level and tries to go past defenders so often, not making a pass?
Please don't take it wrong, he did make many good moments too and clearly makes attack a bigger threat in this game and I really enjoy that, was just wondering if it's only me or others think something similar. Anyway, will see how things change in second half

I think that changing his surname to not have Defoe in it might help 8-)

watched the game ralf and also the previous cup game and agree, he was very wasteful and in the end that cost us, however he is young and an exciting prospect but has an awful lot to learn (which i guess is why he is on loan and not in the barca 1st team set up yet).

he always tried (imo) to beat one man too many and Fulham had him sussed by 2nd half.

Disappointed to be out be we created enough chances to be optimistic going fwd, bring on Newc on Monday night

Yeah, exactly my thoughts - he goes past 2 players already, and instead of giving a pass to right or left (depending on situations etc of course) tries to beat another defender. Wouldn't be that bad if he wouldn't have anyone to give a pass to, but many times he did.
I'm disappointed that we scored first and yet managed to lose in the end, but yeah, hopefully we can now concentrate on the league and improve the squad even more.

Deulofeu did the same thing, over and over again, during this summer's U21-tournament. Very frustrating to watch at times.

Back to PL it is. Who do you guys think will lead the line on Monday?

id be highly shocked if it wasnt Lukaku

back 5 picks itself

mirallas barry McCarthy Naismith (assuming Pienaar is still out which I think he is)

Barkley

Lukaku

its also McCarthy assuming Osman isnt back, McCarthy was poor last night, the other option is Gibson (who is just coming back from injury and was worse than mccarthy last night)

Is Barkley still playing effectively a "second striker" role?

imo yes he is...however when fit as has been said above we now have options....

today didnt work out for Barkley but now for the first time in as many years as I can remember we had options on the bench and on came Osman.

The other thing is that Martinez doesnt seem (unlike Moyes) to be afraid/have the kahunas to make the sub if someone isnt playing well....he has subbed Lukaku, pienaar, barkley, osman to name a few....

wouldnt necessarily say that, the type of player he is.....sometimes things are things arent always going to work out, he still showed great composure on the ball held on to it in the first half when we were under pressure and always showed for it.

all my opinion obviously

I agree with Bunners, he seems to be in that position - made some bad choices(shot the ball towards goal, where he should've passed the ball etc) today that's why got subbed, not that he played that badly in my opinion.

Even in his bad games I like what he brings to the team. Nice and direct, prepared to be the one who changes things and ups the tempo. Not much came off for him but he still forces the opposition to deal with him. Doesn't hide.

Apart from the 3 points, I thought the positives were McCarthy who (despite one very poor challenge) is really starting to shine, Howard's first half, and Osman who managed to surpass his season to date effectiveness in about half an hour. Maybe supersub is a good fit for him given he's clearly on the wane physically?

I started watching this game, but switched to laughing at MU

Barkley was unlucky with a shot which hit the bar, were there (m)any other near misses or potential assists?
