6 is 10 years old this month.

On Monday all the tracks played will be from 2002.

Can't (off the top of my head) think what I might have been listening to around then though.

Never really been a radio listener.... and certainly in 2002 wouldn't have been doing Radio2;

In March 02 I'd have been a mere 26 years young.

Yep, me too.

Been listening to 6music since about 2005;
Prior to that never listened to the radio.

I've always liked the sort of music rarely given the time of day on the radio!

I must have started listening to 6Music pretty early on, maybe even in 2002 itself - I remember one of the first songs I heard on it was Lemon Jelly's 'Spacewalk', just checked and that album is 10 years ago! :shock:

It was much more highbrow in those days, I don't think the audience can have been very high as I regularly won competitions on it :lol: . It's got a lot more mainstream in the last 5 years or so, but at least the car-crash that was the George Lamb show has gone, and I can still switch on and hear something fantastic from a band I'd never heard before, which is amazing when I think what BBC music radio was like when I was a nipper.

Prefer Kerrang! myself, folks get the misconception it is all Avenged Sevenfold, BFMV and thrash metal.. not so.
They play quite a mixed bag, some old some new, Bowie, Hendrix, Black Sabbath, they got me into Twin Atlantic, and Band of Skulls.
They have an intersting 'guess the year' hour in the morning, and Kate Lawler's show at 3pm is very listenable.

As discussed on another thread I started listening to them only in the last few months. I wake up to them in the morning, occasionally listen on headphones at work and on 3g if I'm in my car (no DAB radio). I've already massively increased my modern musical knowledge and find most of the DJs very listenable and mostly knowledgeable plus they are pretty boundless in terms of genre and era. The two annoyances are the music news segments which I find utterly pointless most of the time and also their musical snobbery cf Lana Del Rey and Gotye - started on the A playlist and once they hit the album charts they disappeared. I've often wondered who or what decides when an act has passed the point where they can't be good any more as it seems very formalised.

I like Namone.

Don't mind keaveny in the morning... Until he starts trying to do a double act with the music news guy (Matt from menswear).

Like Lauren Lavern, Steve lemac, mark Riley, Gideon Coe.

Like Huey too and Guy Garvey.

Cerys is hard to take. Jarvis Cockers play list is hit and miss.

Craig Charles' funk zone can be pretty good too.

I like the fact I'm hearing stuff I've never heard whether thats from now or 10/20 years ago. Just as I'll also get to hear a Pink Floyd track (Hey You) just been on or James Brown!

My parents 25th wedding anniversary coincided with the popularity of the Whigfield song "Saturday Night". My late, great Uncle recorded it for prosperity - thanks ( :shock: ) - all and sundry out of sync on the dancefloot to a backdrop of cobs and sausage rolls stacked up on tables behind :lol:

Of course you would never have seen me dancing to that shite but hang on, who's the guy in the garish waistcoat :oops: :lol: :oops: My excuse is the beer was stronger back in the day. Like p1sswater now (thank God :P :P )

Steve Lamacq - note the "q" Zimm :wink: - is an excellent DJ. I must have spent a great wadge of my life listening to the Evening Session between the years 88-97. Very fond memories of that period (think Mark Goodier used to host it pre Lamacq)

Lamacq's Weekender album, from the Wikipedia :-

"Weekenders Mix CDWeekenders was a compilation album mixed by Steve Lamacq in 1996. It has a dance and indie feel rolled into one with tracks such as Pulp's "Common People" and Blur's "Girls and Boys" along side tracks by The Chemical Brothers, Prodigy and Orbital. The album contains two earlier draft track listings for the album. The first track list is given as:

1. Flowered Up - It's On
2. The Charlatans - Weirdo
3. The Stone Roses - Begging You
4. Pulp - Common People
5. Blur - Girls and Boys
6. The Chemical Brothers - In Dust We Trust
7. Primal Scream - Jailbrid
8. Prodigy - Voodoo People
9. Manic Street Preachers - La Tristessa Durerra
10. Tricky - Black Street
11. Monkey Mafia - Blow The Whole Joint Up
12. Happy Mondays - WFL
13. Oasis - Cigarettes and Alcohol
14. Menswear - Daydreamer
15. Black Grape - Rev. Black Grape
16. New Order - Regret
17. The La's - There She Goes
18. Dubstar - The Stars
19. **UNKNOWN ARTIST/TRACK/LABEL** (Has note next to it 'They never do it')
The second track list contains one addition which is 'Paul Weller - Wildwood (Portishead Mix)' but omits some tracks from the first. The final version has mainly the same artists, but different tracks to the previous versions. The album has become a rare and sought-after item among some music fans.

Track listing as released:

1. Pulp - Common People (Motiv-8 Mix)
2. Blur - Boys And Girls (Pet Shop Boys 12" Mix)
3. Dubstar - Stars (Sky 12" Mix)
4. New Order - Spooky (Fluke Remix)
5. Prodigy - Voodoo People
6. The Chemical Brothers - In Dust We Trust
7. Monkey Mafia - Blow The Whole Joint Up
8. Björk - Big Time Sensuality (Megamix)
9. The Charlatans - Weirdo
10. Menswear - Daydreamer/Dubdreamer
11. The Boo Radleys - Lazarus
12. Orbital - Halcyon
13. Garbage - Vow
14. Manic Street Preachers - La Tristessa Durerra (Scream To A Sigh)Remixed by The Chemical Brothers
15. Happy Mondays - Hallelujah (Deadstock Mix)
16. Paul Weller - Kosmos (Lynchmob Beats Mix)
17. The Stone Roses - Waterfall"

WOW - WHAT A GREAT SELECTION 8-) 8-) 8-)

He is from not very far from where Peel lived, and can also talk about more than just music :wink:

On the subject of Peel, why does R6 seem to constantly trail his kid's show? And is it any good?

My only complaint about R6 is the lack of music. There is far too much chat for me, with some of it verging on Smashy'n'Nicey.

March 2002? i'd have stilll been 21 then. :( Radio-wise, I would have almost certainly been listening to a local station called Crash FM, founded by Janice Long. Played 'proper music' and got me into a lot of good stuff. Sadly the station got taken over, a name change (to Juice FM) and became your average, bland dancey/pop commercial radio station for idiots.

6music is certainly the only station I really wanna listen to these days. As has already been said, the DJs have a certain level of knowledge/experience with the music, and when they don't, it's Adam & Joe, so you can't complain! :)

Are you thinking of Radcliffe and Maconie by any chance?? :wink: I have to say, I think when one of them is off for the week leaving the other alone, the show is always the better for it!

Whitestripes - Elephant
Radiohead - Hail to the Thief
Joe Strummer - Streetcore
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Mew (thanks FISO)

Danger, Danger, High Voltage (no idea who, but remember the song). Think their follow up was something to do with a Gay Bar.

You've gotta take the rough with the smooth;

Wednesday night, Gideon Coe's show (Tom Ravenscroft standing in though);

At the time I was sat in bumper to bumper traffic (after the City game).
Listening to a song which was bad. Sounded like someone tapping milk bottles.
After what seemed like an age I remarked that the song better end soon as it was getting on my knockers; after that point it was on for another 34 minutes!!!!!

Turns out it was on for 42 minutes in total!!!!

Terry Riley, In C for anyone interested.

For the sadists amongst you, it starts at about 1h 25 into the show on Wed night. Finishes about 2h 07.
Worth listening to the last minute or so and the comments from the DJ (which were sent in to him).

To avoid having to listen to it could you summarise the comments? I'm not sure they can get away with playing a single track for most of a show... anyone could do that surely? I only listen between breakfast and Lamaq so it's normally much more hit than miss for me.

Things like;

"Tom are you still there? Are you alright"?

"Is this for real"?

Our particular favourite, because this summed up our mindset;
"I am now laughing for no apparent reason, I think you have broken my brain".

Toms opening comment was, "not a song you hear on the radio very often".

Not sure on the legality angle, I remember they did a Pink Floyd night about 6 months ago. Played a full 20 odd minutes of Echoes :D

Tom Ravenscroft is John Peel's son, in case you didn't know, and he seems to have a similarly, erm, idiosyncratic taste in music...seems to be allowed to indulge it even when sitting in for someone else, which surprises me, but I admire the spirit of experimentation.
