Premier Fantasy 2011-12

By Dale Johnson
ESPNsoccernet

Solid defensive play from the likes of John Terry will be even more valuable in 2011-2012.

ESPNsoccernet's Premier Fantasy returns for another campaign, and this season we unveil a brand new game which will bring a different challenge for managers.

Whereas in past seasons we've seen midfielders and strikers prove to be the key buys, our scoring system aims to level the playing field for goalkeepers and defenders which means investing in those at the back who keep clean sheets and score goals will be equally as important.

Notable changes for the 2011-12 season include:

* Goal assists are now worth three points, an extra point on 2010-11
* Defenders no longer get minus points for the first goal they concede. This is a key change as it is essentially worth an extra point to every defensive player who concedes a goal. Minus points will only begin from the second goal conceded, and for every two goals thereafter.
* As such, clean sheets are now worth three points, rather than four.
* Points awarded for penalty saves increase to five
* Penalty misses and own goals cost -2

This has been reflected in the new values for the 2011-12 campaign, with defensive players now priced at a similar level to more attacking players. While it may still be tempting to spend most of your budget on midfielders and strikers, this season it will be equally as important to invest in goalkeepers and defenders too. Captains are still in the game, enabling you to double points on a player each gameweek.

There is also a revamp of the way the competition works, making it now a game of two halves as well as a season-long competition.

After the final gameweek of the year, which falls on New Year's Eve, we will crown the champion of the first Segment of the game and what happens next will be crucial.

All fantasy squads - as well as player values - will be reset and each manager will have two weeks to reselect their squads for Segment 2. You will keep all your points from the first Segment to go towards the overall season competition, but there will also be a prize for the winner of Segment 2, which creates a fresh chance for managers who have struggled before Christmas to get back into the game - or give a chance to those who missed out on the start of Segment 1.

There may be some managers who do not like the idea of reselecting squads, but it adds an extra dimension of skill to game - especially with the January transfer window open. It also removes the pressure of using too many transfers in Segment 1, enabling you to transfer out injured, suspended or under-performing players without the threat of transfers running out for the rest of the season.

Before the first match of the Premier League season, and also prior to the first match of Segment 2, there will be a transfer amnesty meaning managers can make as many changes as they wish without it affecting their Segment allocation. Each manager will receive 20 transfers to use in Segment 1, and another 20 in Segment 2. Unused transfers will not carry over.

As in previous years, all managers can enter private leagues along with their friends - up to a maximum of three leagues per team. And each gameweek will lock at the first kickoff of the week. Games which are postponed and rearranged for any reason will qualify to score points in the week they are actually played.

I put together a team for this game. Have played the ESPN game the last couple of years and found it to be a decent game.

Also have not seen any FISO league yet and there was one last year.

None of the links to the Premier game seem to be working at the moment although the game is only due to be down a short period today:
