Parkrun
Having seen a few fisoers comments on TK's thread I thought it might be interesting to have a separate thread for those of us who do parkruns on Saturday mornings.
For those who don't know, parkrun is a free to enter 5km run. All you need to do is register for free, print out your barcode, find your local parkrun, and run! Details are here.
It's open to all ages and abilities from dog walkers to serious club athletes. The best thing about it is you get your barcode scanned as you pass the finish line then, by the time you've gone home, had a shower and a bacon roll, your results are usually up online.
I've only run a few times and times will differ greatly depending on how easy the course is - for example, my local parkrun is usually quite tacky underfoot and has a couple of nasty little inclines. That said I'm determined to see it through there until I can get under 24 minutes. That's the great thing about it - everyone has their own personal goals, whether it's to break 20 minutes or 40 minutes.
So far I've gone from 29.40 (05 Jan) to 24.28 (18 May).
Some weeks I run with my kids who are 5 & 6. My youngest has done 39.05 (05 May) and my eldest has been amazing, getting from 37.19 (02 Mar) to 33.24 (25 May)
So the idea is to keep a list of our pb's and see if we can use this as motivation to keep the times tumbling down.
Digsby: 29.40 26.01 25.16 24.28
Mini-Digsby 1: 37.19 33.24
Mini-Digsby 2: 39.05
Going to only post improvements so hopefully there's more to come!

Re: Parkrun
Good man digsby! Made my Parkrun debut on sat, hoping to do 2-3 a month, other commitments allowing, using them as a fitness measure while I train for Bristol half marathon in September.
Would like to say am also using them as a nice social sat morning with other runners, but didn't speak to a soul on sat. May attempt to this week!
Rather worryingly my time is under pressure from your six year old -
01/06 - 30:37
There's an almighty (feels almighty anyway) hill at my local one, first 2.5 k all uphill before turning for the decent, according to my runkeeper app I hit a 12:53 mins per mile pace at one point on the way up, and at the other extreme 7:25 mins per mile at one point on the way down. Anything under 10:00 min per mile pace on flat and I'm happy.

Re: Parkrun
Not a 'parkrun' but I have said I will be running in this with my dog. Still running 5k in a park.
Would like to think we can do it sub-30 but I'm not fit enough yet (currently aching after a 5-a-side tournament last night - although I feel fitter playing footie thanks to the odd run/jog/walk with my dog as training over the last 2 or 3 weeks)

Re: Parkrun
Just found out I have been successful in a ballot to compete in a 5 mile run that ends in the Olympic Stadium. One day after my 3 mile (5k) run. Not sure I'll be doing it...

Re: Parkrun
Done one so far, St Albans, and pleased with the time (19.07). Trying to shake off a bout of Planta Faciitis (tendon forming the arch of the foot) so probably won't manage another for a while.

Re: Parkrun
Received my result text - I've gone backwards!
01/06 - 30:37
08/06 - 31:25
Am fairly comfortable with that though, felt harder today with extra hill running. Will be interested to see how many pb's there were when full results published.

Just noticed that there was one in Swindon today. Definitely going to go for this! Not sure when the next one is, but am sure it will be shown at somepoint.

Re: Parkrun
It should be every week, starting at 9am - have had a quick look at parkrun website, looks like its done at Lydiard Park (if that means anything to you)?!
Have just checked my full results, there were indeed only 12 in my age group! Next slowest 29:09, gives me something to aim for.

Re: Parkrun
There is a FAQ which says they mostly are but e-mail the local organisers to check.Richt wrote:Would be good if they are dog friendly too....
I looked at the results of one fairly near me and there were 100+ runners so these are more popular than I realised. Will maybe do one before my 'proper' 5k run.

Re: Parkrun
Apparently they are starting a parkrun up near me soon.
How do they work?
Can you just turn up and run (with no specific start time) ?

Re: Parkrun
Hi Rick. Look at the 1st post and check out the park run link.
You can just go along and run without registering but you won't get your official time recorded. Your best bet is to register (only takes a minute) and print out your barcode. Not sure about your local park run but think they all start at 9am.

Re: Parkrun
Cheers digsby, ours is not listed yet, so I can't sign up just yet.
Looks from the pictures that everyone starts at the same time.
To be honest if everyone is starting at the same time I don't see it much different to a normal race. Was hoping for something a bit more casual.

Re: Parkrun
It's a properly measured course with a proper timing mechanism, but relatively hassle free compared to a normal race in that you don't have to register for a specific race on a specific day or do anything in advance apart from register on the site and print out your barcode (once, you can reuse it and it prints several the first time anyway).Rick wrote:Cheers digsby, ours is not listed yet, so I can't sign up just yet.

If you don't like running with a pack time a minute from the gun, then set off, and then deduct 1 minute from your time when you get it.
