Buy some shares. Forget about 'em. Wait for the email telling you you've won. Never fails. :)

Seriously, get your portfolio down to a single share fairly quickly. It costs 2.5% (or thereabouts) to swap with another share, so don't do it for the sake of doing it.

Apart from that, it's basically luck!

INVESTOROFTHEYEAR COMP

Post by iow »

Are you better off selling off 4 of your 5 shares within say the first month, or sooner, so you only pay 4 lots of commission and you thus end up holding just 1 share (assuming this is in the rules) and are there are any specific sectors you like more than others without naming specifc shares? :)

I'm pretty sure that last year, the first 5 trades were comission free. That's not the case this year, but I would still look to "slim down" sooner rather than later.

As for sectors... the stock market has just fallen heavily. Some think it will return to its previous position at some point, i which case those shares that fell the most will rise the most.

3801 entrants in the competition, is that higher or lower than last year?

6pm on the Monday (unless Monday is a Bank Holiday). Something you can do is decide to sell shares, then cancel the sale from your 'pending' list before 6pm the same day.

Thanks for confirmation regarding selling/buying times...
Followed your advice and I have sold shares and now I hold just the one share. Noticed that commission certainly whacked a chunk out of my profit. Guess trading 2-3 times a month is the most I should consider?

Any idea on who the leaders must have banked on? They have stormed to £17k from £10k in a day (think it was yesterday)

https://www.investoroftheyear.co.uk/?pa ... &pagenum=1

I have been fluctuating madly with a best position of 170 and worst of 3259 (out of 3365)

currently 352nd - was 1600th yesterday. Markets are mad...

Have pretty much consolidated into 80%/20% split of holdings between 2 companies. Waiting to decide whether all should go into one stock yet.

The problem is that AIM stocks can be chosen. I nearly lost 1st place last year when some-one's shares jumped 70% in a single day and they appeared on the leaderboard from nowhere!

This morning, for example, CMR has jumped 67% from 0.3p to 0.5p. Another example is OTO (a colleague has this in the Investaquest competition) which has gone from 200p to 1110p in two months.

Well those 2 big leaders have disappeared now!!!

Are you sure all AIM stocks can be selected? I can't see ones that I would want in the list.

Not all of them (don't know about the two I mentioned), and CRX isn't there. Last year I was (almost) caught by BKE, which is definitely a penny share!

Accroding to sunday times today the current leader has more than doubled his money.

Not sure my 15 transfers will help me on this one :?

Are you sure you're talking about the Observer competition, as it doesn't have transfers :?

LEADERBOARD INVESTOROFTHEYEAR

Post by KaKaMyPants »

Just out of interest as of 30th June last year

The current top five portfolios were:

1. o2baflyonthewall - GBP13,035.31
2. Argaty Prospect - GBP12,953.43
3. Loftgroover - GBP12,930.25
4. Ian Rogers - GBP12,502.50
5. Duncton Shares - GBP12,326.65

24th July 2006 (3 weeks later pro-rata) I have noted Ian Rogers back again in the top 5, must be very good as he is leading at the moment. Profits seem much smaller compared to this time last year so the markets must be more volatile compared to last? Only 11 players so far with profit in excess of 11K. Just thought Mr Spitles and Mongoose might find it interesting.... :D
