And I thought my average transfer use of 2ish was low!
Less than 1 really puts you in the tortoise hugging club Andy  ... impressive!

As a rough guide I planned my transfer usage to be around:
7 transfers - 20 fixture sets - 2009
8 transfers - 18 fixture sets + 3-4 (equiv.) fixture sets of FA Cup - 2010

Of course there are many factors that would wreck this usage plan... still, I always find it useful to have a plan... What do others think?

It’s a solid idea MV, depending obviously on the dreaded injuries etc. With African Nations in January it might be wise to save a couple for then, depending on who you have ofcourse! I unfortunately don’t tend to have the luxury of keeping my hand off the trigger for transfers, getting better with each season but have used 5 in my top team so far. Will be looking to have 5-6 still going into January, without injuries coming into play. That for me would be a good as I normally run out by mid Feb!

I don't tend to have any plan around holding back a certain number of transfers and just replace players when the need arises (long term injuries, long term loss of form, significantly improved coverage, okay and the odd tinker  ). I've used 1-3 so far, except for my bottom team and ISO where I've opted for some restructuring and used 5.

My issues now are the odd Piquionne and a whole load of Milijas, who'll presumably pop up with another goal for Serbia just to rub it in  . Ideally I'd like to upgrade these two, particularly Milijas, but haven't seen good enough downgrades elsewhere to allow this. All depends on any injuries picked up in the internationals I suppose.

I’ve used 1, 1, 3 & 5 in mine so far, except for ISO where I’ve gone for it & spanked 8

I’m like you LT and if a player’s looking like a dud or there’s someone beginning to shine then I can’t help myself getting rid, so long as the transfers generate the extra points over the season then there's no problem in that (you just need loads of injury luck along the way!!). Also seems more important than ever to spend the money where it matters this season, certain players are points magnets (especially with double MOM points on star players) so no harm in a nice early re-jig IMO, though I'd never leave any less than 5/6 for Jan.

Last season my side which did well had 12 left in Jan, although it was nice I wish I’d used more early doors as I was struggling for decent opportunities towards the end, especially with no FA cup. With the cup lottery re-introduced I’m aiming to have 3 sides with at least 10 left, plus a couple with 5/6 which I hope will be able to hang on.

Finally hit the leaderboard 8-)

Four transfers used but three of those were in the second week in a desperate (but successful) reshuffle. I've got a couple of dubious midfielders but I'm not sure what to with them until I decide what to do about Ferdinand :?

At the start of this thread I was 26th. but now have dropped down to 188th.
I'm pleased with this for one reason only - Transfers left = 15.
The only turkey that I'm left with is (you guessed it) Milijas.
I'm 132 points behind, which is not a lot in this game and I do have a fluid strategy.
What would peeps do in this position?
Don't let the leaders get too far ahead, burn 1 or 2 transfers now, or suck it up and wait the course.

Personally i wouldn't waste a valuable transfer on an enabler such as Milijas. He will get back in the team soon enough and get the odd assist to make up for the few points lost when he was dropped. Save your transfers for the bigger players.

i think that transfers as the holy grail are overestimated even though i tend to be someone who guards them jealously until the new year.

in the past chris has won this i think having blown either all or almost all not long after christmas. with a squad game and a bit of luck this is definitely a possibility and with only 15 for the season a few injuries and the odd bargain appearance may leave you with little choice

in the past i won the star comp having used ALL my trannies by xmas! (wasnt mad was securing the £2k 1/2 season prize).

that said im still a fan of later in the year transfers and would usually hope to have at least 8 left by new year but with so few trannies it isnt always possible or sensible  with this game.

IMO if you are going to transfer out an enabler for another enabler... you should do it early or not at all.

That said... Points are the same wherever they come from... And if you look at Brams site, you can see that there have been sub 3m players scoring approx 100- 120 points nearly every season in TFF! On that basis, I don’t think it’s wise to carry a non-scoring or very low scoring player for too long.

Re. Milijas… definitely a hard call
If he continues to score at this rate he'll probably score another 50 points!?
I would suggest that is probably the least he’ll score injury free.
So the question is… can you identify another enabler that will notably outscore him so as to justify a transfer? Pleas PM me if you do ;)

EDIT Actually IMO the whole enabler issue is a red heron.
If you have a low scoring player and you have cash and transfers to upgrade him to a much higher scoring player... Well, scoring more points is the aim of the game and if your ‘big team’ players are performing and fit already… LOL

Sorry for the confusion:( but my post wasn't clear as usual.
I will probably still have Milijas at the end of the season, - after all, he is an enabler. I suppose what I was looking for opinions on was a) should I use a couple of transfers up to try and catch the leaders or b) sit tight and bind my time.
It is proving to be really difficult to sit on my transfer fingers, but I suppose being 130 odd points behind is not too bad is it?
There is the FA cup and African Nations thing to consider, so it's maybe wise to sit on it? :?

my own view is different mv.

i think if he looks like scoring a string of 1 and 0 (which milijas does now) you should get rid.

i am happy to wait till after the int break.

if someone gets injured that is the source of funds, if they don't hopefully the delay has made it clearer where to go.

if i blow 6 points so be it.

if the eventual gap from the winner is less than 6-points i'll be surprised

Actually, looking back, your post was pretty clear c00kie... I guess I just have too many Milijas' on the mind LOL ;)

As for using a couple of transfers now…
IMO 130 pts is not significant at this point. We are less than a quarter of the way through the season. To put it into perspective… starring Fabregas twice over Arshavin in just 2 games could have net a team a 68-point advantage… That’s just from 1 player on 2 occasions!!!

If your players are fit and playing, if your team covers most/ all flanges and if the reasons/ belief for your original choices still stand… hold fire on the transfers ;)

NB. But I agree with Andy that if you believe Milijas will only score 0s and 1s dump him ASAP. And to be fair, I do have multiple squads, and as such I will dump him from a few of them to balance the risk (as I can upgrade after gaining funds from transferring in the odd VFM high points scorer that I missed pre-season.)

Well thank you for your thoughts and time, it is appreciated.
Milijas:- Wolves fixtures at the start of the season convinced me to give him a try, however, fixtures are now 'turning against them' and I think that it is nearly time to help him out the door.
I also have 1 defender and another midfielder who are on borrowed time but I do have a plan for them.
I'll have to work out dates and such and I much appreciate your input.
Cheers. :)

Thanks to Fabregas, I'm 91st with one Transfer used. Lofty heights indeed!

To think I almost changed Fab to Arshavin last week - now I'm in a quandary; who's the best value?

Welcome to the TFFO forum bodgit.

Hadn't occurred to me that anyone would have brought in Arshavin for Fabregas last week, but I guess there must be a few out there who made the move. I imagine we're unlikely to hear from them on this thread for now though.

Got the impression that there was a lot of movement in the top 100 this week, so it’s time for an update.

Couldn't think of a way of stretching the top 100 to include my team in 104th so there's exactly 100 this time.

Still no sign of Oddsman despite the impressive weekly scores he posted and it’s another animal lover who’s threatening to dominate the leaderboard as FrankieFrog now has 8 sides in the top 100 as well as filling most of the top 20 places in the weekly and monthly tables.

Re: Top 100 (the top 2% brag thread)

Post by MindVampire »

In weeks 16 and 17 he scored about 100 pts. These were high scoring weeks. For example, I scored 194 pts in those 2 weeks and Oddsman scored well over 200 pts!!! Since week 17 Mr Buchanan hasn't scored particularly badly…

As for why… He won the joint Aug and Sept manager of the month. I doubt this is the reason, but it's not impossible he burnt transfers doing this and/ or left himself a poorer squad for later fixtures. More likely though, he just didn't set up one of week 16 or week 17, but this is of course just supposition…
