Call me old fashioned but I don't believe or agree with a few years residency in a country should qualify any individual for national citizenship.

Image
Michael Leach. Great player. Fijian parents, born in New Zealand, moved to Japan when he was a kid. I wouldn’t have much of an issue with him playing for any of those 3 countries.

To be honest mate I just enjoy watching the game. More important things to get angry about than what country someone plays sport for.
8-)
I'm not angry at all, I just think its pathetic. Much like The English so called cricket team having more players born outside the British isles calling themselves English.

I pretty much despise all the international sports for this very reason. I wouldn't bother with an England game in anything now days as I wouldn't call half the payers English, in the true sense.

I just happened to see the tv in the pub and gave it a double take when someone suggested it was Japan playing  even the rugby fans watching agreed with me that it was a joke.

Perhaps if i spend just a few more weeks a year in Spain i can apply for a dual nationality passport.

I have always been troubled by the passport of convenience in sport. I don't see this guy as the worst example - went on a school exchange to Japan, liked it enough to return for his university years, now a Japanese citizen. If you live and work and pay taxes somewhere full time and have the passport then it is hard to argue against, but I fear some countries are handing out passports and bribes to suddenly become top sporting nations.

The central issue to me in terms of wearing the shirt is whether you commit to the culture. I lived overseas full time for 3 years, tax resident. But whilst I tried to fit in, respect the ways of my new location etc and learned as much about the place as I could, for much of the time I hung out with ex-pats in ex-pat locations, shopped at ex-pat supermarkets etc. I certainly remained British in my mind and even if allowed to vote in my temporary home would never have done so as it felt wrong.

It does not stop me watching sport or enjoying sport, but it does seem a tad ridiculous when a country celebrates and a flag is raised for someone who has clearly not committed themselves to that country/flag for anything other than sporting representation (often because they would have little chance of getting into the national team of their actual country).

There also seems to be a wide variety in how rules are applied. Jofra Archer's dad is British, and in many sports that is nationality sorted. But because he had not lived here, he had a qualifying period. It would be nice if sports could come together and have a consistent set of rules on this.

I think that is part of the problem, the different rules in different sports. Seemingly every way of measuring it has its drawbacks but it would be good if all sports followed the same structure.

Unfortunately this issue often has a much darker undertone which I see no point in engaging with.

indeed.

Interesting that when Jack Charlton was Ireland manager his efforts to make everyone Irish raised a smile more often than not, yet when others do it a rather different response tends to arise. Reminds me of that Blackadder episode where the British spies were heroes but German spies underhand so and sos...

Argentina and Uruguay are the only teams in this world cup where all the players are born and bred from their country.

Japan's win makes a big difference in many ties, but now the dust has settled, only Mo Bot's Fijians have won every game. Two other unbeaten teams are Jimmy Ching's Argies and 2011 champ Namibia, coached by kingcurtley. DLIAH's Japan is the other group winner and these four will be kept apart for the quarters.

So the champions, Georgia go home after basically stinking the competition out. The other winners of this comp, Namibia still look the ones to beat.

Mo Bot's Fiji just got the better of The Bear's France despite bear tipping France to win v Wales ! The only group winner to lose is DLIAH, Boddington steering his kiwis through at the death.

Balls. Sorry to all involved and the integrity of the competition for missing the deadline. Good luck in the final.

For what it’s worth, I would have gone for a NZ win today and a Wales win by 12 tomorrow.
