S4 - do you mean that if you fancied all 3 sets on matchday 1 that you could play them all and be 2 games ahead?

The positive side of catch-up is that it enables latecomers to come up to speed during a season. The negative side (that some people express) is the "Pick and choose" attitude.

I personally see the latter as part of the game. You go for the overall prize and forego the Cups.

Compromise suggestion - no catch-up after X games. where X could be 9, 12 or whatever. Pick the number X so that latecomers still have a chance to catch-up in a season if they join by, say, matchday X/2.

e.g. with 11 games gone, I have 4 catch-ups left. Matchday 12 is the last catch-up day of the season. I play 2 sets and lose my other 2 catch-ups. From the following weeks, there is no catch-up, except maybe the extra one-set-of-fixtures day at the end of the season?

Thanks for your replies so far, I agree with nash that it is the 'cherrypicking' aspect that bothers some people, but as rightly pointed out playing that way does compromise your full potential in the additional cup competitions.

I also agree with nash that the most positive aspect of catch up is that it allows newcomers to join at anytime and have the chance to catch up.

Spencer: I think Shrews mentioned something similar to what you suggested a while back ie. being able to play games 'in advance' - this would also compromise your potential for doing well in the cup comps as you could find yourself on 19 games played and the comp may have only reached the QF or SF stage.

Personally I'm with (thelip) and am happy enough to play each matchday as it is, but I do realise it's not to everyones taste.

Personally like Ian's idea.

The main problem with the current structure is that it is very difficult to win the cups, whilst maintaining league position.

Just as in 'real life'. It would really be a super achievement to win league and cup.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. Why not do it? I do have a problem occasionally with holidays etc. a more flexible approach would be good.

I dislike the whole idea of catch up but see why it is there so I dont suppose it will be scrapped as I'd like.

Losing Set 20 was a good idea.

My simple compromise solution - put a limit on. Say 3 a season. People can still cherry pick / forget / go on holiday to an extent.

Maybe extend it for brand newbies to 5.

(PS I am using Set 20 this time - using the rules - but would rather I wasn't able to)

Not only have Sheffield United cost me my first 7xW today by losing at home, they,ve also cost me promotion as the 10 extra points would have meant guaranteed 4th spot.

As long as it comes back up with my scores boasted I'll be happy. I think I need 'boro to not win then I may survive.

Thanks Grant, it was a bit too close for comfort, sorry Spencer.

murf, if teams are level on points, position goes the one with most wins, then most draws. For identical records, as you are playing your final catch up on Mdy 20 there will be no time for a tiebreaker, so it will go down to the longest serving team and if it is still level your previous seasons score will be used.

Oh dear, that doesn't work in my favour. Assuming BadaBing's boys turn up then I'll need 17 on wednesday (and a very greedy hat trick fuelled 30 for the FISO league....)

I've just done my crucial Set 20 picks.

Think it would have been easier to select 7 draws.....

Yes the yellow zone means you qualify for Champions Cup.
I think there will be 4 extra promotion places for teams in Div 6 due to non playing teams being removed, so if you finish 8th or above in D6 you're likely to win promotion. All will be revealed later tomorrow after the final games of the season.
