Rule Changes:

POINT SYSTEM FOR KNOCKOUT MATCHES

Win in 90 minutes = 5
Win in extra time = 4
Win on penalties = 3
Defeat on penalties = 1
Defeat in extra time = 0.5
Defeat in 90 = 0

RULE CHANGE TO CONTROL NUMBERS GETTING THROUGH

QFs starts with 8 people

The following are the 'target' numbers to get through each remaining round

QF: 4 semi-finalists
SF: 2 finalists

Anybody tied for the last qualifying place gets through but starts the next round with a half point penalty.

So, it won't just be last place who goes out but maybe more besides. e.g. The aim is to lose 4 of the 8 in the next round so we have a more manageable 4 semi finalists and 2 finalists (like wot you get in knockout cups). If, as is likely, we have a tie that straddles 4th/5th place then everybody on that tie gets through but those straddling start the next round with a half point penalty. This all replaces rule 5 which no longer applies (if over half the contestants are tied for last then they will all get through as straddling the last qualification position and start the next round on -0.5)

Confused? Just pick as normal, try and get as many points as possible with the aim of making the top 4 and then sit back and let my calculator enter meltdown on your behalf ....

Does that mean the guys with ten points from the last round start 0.5 behind?

PS There will be no need for the drawing of lots ever in my game. Amateur organisation at the ACN if they have to resort to that
You say "Amateur" but the rules are the same for the world cup:

Haven't looked it up but has it ever happened before in a major tournament:

World cup rules:
If one considers all possible outcomes (win, draw, loss) for all six matches in a group, there are 729 (= 36) different outcome combinations possible. However, a certain number (115) of these combinations lead to more than one team occupying the second place in the group. In such case, the ranking among these teams is determined as follows:[43]

Greatest combined goal difference in all group matches
Greatest combined number of goals scored in all group matches
If more than one team remain level after applying the above criteria, their ranking will be determined as follows:
Greatest number of points in head-to-head matches among those teams
Greatest goal difference in head-to-head matches among those teams
Greatest number of goals scored in head-to-head matches among those teams
If any of the teams above remain level after applying the above criteria, their ranking will be determined by the drawing of lots

I know UEFA changed the rules for the Euros so if the opponents in game 3 are those in a dead heat at full time, a penalty shootout is held.

Yes does seem they have it sorted, whereas world and Africa don't, the chances of getting 2 teams exactly equal and not playing each other in round 3 must be very low to move past point 6,but to then have an equal coefficient must be near impossible, I would of said point 8 should come before 7 but the chances of getting to lots must be virtually nil.

Tie-breaking
If two or more teams were equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following tie-breaking criteria were applied:[59][60]

Euro's
1.Higher number of points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question;
2.Superior goal difference resulting from the matches played between the teams in question;
3.Higher number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question;[c]
4.Superior goal difference in all group matches;
5.Higher number of goals scored in all group matches;
6.If two teams tie alone (according to 1–5) after having met in the last round of the group stage their ranking is determined by penalty shoot-out.
7.Position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system;
8.Fair play conduct of the teams (final tournament);
9.Drawing of lots.

Was thinking you'd just be a point down as this is another dull 0-0 but it can't just finish 1-1. Extra time and pens then having to look up how many points it is worth to both sides.

Congo were 2 up with 62 mins on the clock, now 3-2 down!

Obviously this game was difficult to predict to begin with, as the form book always goes out of the window when it's a Congo derby.

And there was one more goal....

4-2 comeback win for Dr Congo who could only do dull 1-1s in the group games.

Bookies had it fairly even with Docs slight favourites but I preferred Congo's form. Oh well...

And our Tunisian jokers are deprived of maximum points by a dubious penalty deep into Ferguson Time. Ouch.

I feel cheated (and I haven't even seen any of the game). Imagine how furious I'm going to be when I catch the highlights of the host nation cheating their way through. The cheats.

I'm over it.

Without doing too much calculating, I imagine I could do with a Guinea victory over Ghana, and an Algeria win. Oh, and a miracle.

Points so far

Congo DR 5
Congo 0
Eq Guinea 4
Tunisia 0.5
Ghana 5
Guinea 0

(Ivory Coast v Algeria is 1-1 at 67 mins)

11 robot i
10.5 kingcurtley aJ
10.5 Ashers a
10.5 Ralfbergs a
10.5 GregsEggs a
10.5 murf i
10.5 Arabian Knight i
6 moonlightdribbler a

I think moonlight dribbler is out (can only come 5th) and kingcurtley is safe (worst of =4th). For the other 6 of us it is win and go through, lose and go out - unless you are an Algeria picker and they lose in 90. Perversely the 3 Algeria pickers on 10.5 without jokers will go through (as =4th) if they lose in 90 but if they drag it into extra time before losing then the bonus point(s) will move kingcurtley ahead of them and knock them out.
